Released after a quarter of a century locked away in a vault somewhere, this is previously unseen footage of the “Godfather of Self-Appointed Title’s” 1979 comeback tour.
James Brown is on top form and clearly enjoying every minute of being up there on stage. He has got his band so tight that they seem to be taking their cues from each shake of the head or wiggle of JB’s backside. The title track features a great sax solo highlighting the fact that while there was never any doubt who was the Number One Soul Brother, James Brown always gave more space to his soloists than anyone else outside the world of jazz. Another highlight is a twenty minute version of ‘Sex Machine’ given the full spaced out funk treatment rather than the souped up pop version.
My one criticism is that it would be good to know who all the musicians playing on this DVD are apart from James Brown.
There are lot of DVDs around featuring James Brown but if you need to feel funky, you need this one in your collection.
The DVD is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound.
