‘Little Trumpet’ was first muted way back in February as Peterson gave it a white label play on his show. Don’t let the description as a “laid back piece of breakbeat jazz” put you off. There’s bit of a ‘guess the tune’ from the breaks influence but Wah Wah got the cheque book out for a certain Andrew Coleman (Young Jazz Musician of the Year 1999) to do all the brass bits. We’re certainly blessed with trumpet players in the UK at the moment with the likes of Bryan Corbett and Chris Batchelor.
On the AA side, vocals are provided by Derek Green on a slice of modern soul-boogie that’s found favour with the Mancunian tune mafia of the Unabombers, Only Child and Mr. Scruff!
Multi-instrumentalist Jamie is a welcome addition to the Wah Wah 45′s hit factory with Aaron Jerome and Talc. The singles by Unforscene (featuring Alice Russell) ‘Don’t You Worry’ and Mo’High by Max Cole have both been nominated for track of the year on Worldwide.
Like Aaron, Jamie is not adverse to some action behind the decks either as he joined the bosses Servini and Simon Goss last month at Cargo for Wah Wah (Gilles Peterson Club Night of the year nominated).
And talking of the ever busy Servini, check their web site for where he will be appearing next as he’s just done ‘U Need This!’ with Domu, Mark Ronson and the If Music crew at Plastic People. Dom can also to be found at Medicine with Norman Jay (see links below) and keep your ears open for tracks from the forthcoming Max Cole album (especially the one with vocals by Lucy May).
So no need for Jamie to blow his own trumpet now he’s on one of the hottest labels around.
