Dusty is eight-piece band that are immersed in the music of the past but with the freshness of the present. Led by producer and the keyboards of Christian ‘Dusty’ Doepke, an exotic breed you might say.
In fact, ‘An Exotic Breed’ is coming out on 12″ and it’s the best track for me as it echo’s the quality of Best Seven as a seamless mix of jazz, Brasilia and dub. And talking of Brasil, there’s a couple of vocal tracks featuring Carla Vallet, the beautiful ‘Rhythmo’ with rain forest flute by Florian Riedl (who also plays sax and clarinet on the album) and subtle conga from Dhpizza.
So you want to dance? ‘Salsa Step’ is not the cheesy stuff, it’s RAW – big horn, percussion heavy and a touch of dirty BITA synth and ‘Loco Para La Pista’ ups the pace to 100mph! Showing respect to Fania here as does the opener (and title track), ‘Keep It Raw’ with more than a nod to those Blue Note masters of old.
So what you say? So it’s great and if you love funky tracks with a bass clarinet, ‘Voodoo’ is magic. For funky afro soul break phreaks, there’s ‘Revolver Theme’ but there are no duff tracks on this album and the last two are big ‘uns; especially ‘Explosion’.
If you’ve ever bought a record on Tru-Thoughts, Freestyle, Wah Wah 45s to name just three labels off the top of my head, you’re going to love this one just as much as Alan at Soulseduction.
“Finally, an album from Dusty, and what corker it is too. Keep It Raw is jazzy, funky and very hypnotic. Most of all its fun and uplifting and puts a smile on your face and a tap in your step. Just the kind of music I need at the end of winter”, Alan @ Soulseduction.
