Jamie Woon – Wayfaring Asset

is relatively still at the start of his career even after the success of ‘Wayward Stranger’ of a couple of years ago; Hectic grabs a quick chat at Cargo where he’s on the same bill as and James Pants!

Before Jamie eats the chicken, tonight he’s part of the mega line up of the Broadcasting gig at Cargo (see Joe Bataan chat HERE and James Pants HERE), Jamie Woon tells me that he would be playing “stripped down versions of my songs with my acoustic guitar”. OK, that’s cool but I wondered why he seemed a little distracted? “There’s a big buzz about the chicken, he’s come all the way from America to cook chicken! I’ve looked him up on his web site”.
For all of Jamie’s enthusiasm for by Dante’s Fried Chicken BBQ, as a veggie, I wasn’t quite into to the chicken buzz so I get him on the subject of the Burial remix of his debut single ‘Wayfaring Stranger’ (see review and video HERE).
“That came about via a mutual friend (Charlie Dark) as I mentioned it would be great to have a Burial remix, not ever thinking it would happen and then the next thing, I was invited to his studio as he was finishing it off”. Thhis was before Burial had his own break-through with the Untrue album,
So what has Jamie been doing since then, “writing songs and still gigging” he says modestly. But he’s not only been doing that as he’s been to the last Red Bull Music Academy in Barcelona, learned some production and programming skills, appeared on the main stage at the Big Chill as a late replacement (only to be followed by Mixmaster Morris and then got himslef back stage to see the Mighty Boosh set), got signed up with Na?Øve Records (via Antoine Rajon), he’s been working on a new EP for release later this year and the debut album that’s due out early in 2010. Phew! That’s quite a lot but he’s in very good hands with Na?Øve as we know from Anthony Joseph & The Spasm Band and the soon to be released Private Domain album; not forgetting Antoine’s past dealings with Heavenly Sweetness (including Anne Wirz/Four Tet, Byard Lancaster and The Rongetz Foundation) and his Phill project (including Rufus Harley)
As tonight’s gig was also a launch for RBMA 2010 (this time to be held in London), he tells me, “RMBA was brilliant. I’d applied to go to the previous one in Toronto but without luck so I had another go and got into last year”. And his reward for perseverance, “I met (jazz legend) Gary Bartz who is a lovely man and got to play with Front 242″ (original Belgium electronic body music terrorists, you may recall ‘Never Stop!’) And he didn’t stop with just those two, check out the double CD by RBMA that comes with an application form for 2010.
Jamie’s next big gig is back in at Sonar (“I’m so grateful to be given the opportunity”) but the songs he’s playing tonight are ‘Night Air’, ‘Missing Person’, ‘The Place To Be’ and ‘Half As Much’. So what can expect the recorded versions to sound like? “Shuggie Otis, ambient soul; big 80s reverb; I grew up listening to my Mum’s new age music”. Hold on, new age music!
“Yeah, that’s when I knew I wanted to be a musician/performer when my Mum (aka Mae McKenna) recorded a Blue Grass-Celtic album in Tennessee”. And if you want to check it out, its called Shore To Shore; see links below and possibly an itunes listing to come.
Getting back to RBMA, one of the tracks, ‘I’m Goin’ Wit’ You’, Jamie appears, co-wrote and features alongside Om’Mas Keith (he of Sa-Ra and there’s some serious, Shafiq Husayn news coming soon) and Jamie adds, “He’s on P.Diddy’s TV show at the moment, he’ll be so good on T.V.”. And another tip for the top, is the producer from France/Glasgow, D?©bruit (Oh yeah!, we’re on that with the Kotchy ‘Check Out My Keychain‘ remix and look out for the latest Architeq EP on TIRK called, ‘Birds Of Prey’ that’s not only has a D?©bruit remix but it also features a mighty James Pants version).
Big thank yous once again to Karen P and her Broad Casting crew and we’re definitely going to be keeping a close eye on Mr. Woon over the forthcoming months; definitely well worth checking out his myspace site.
