There’s no point beating yourself up about it, just let the Plump DJs do it for themselves on the remix; ouch! It’s so hard it hurts.
Plump DJs (aka Lee Rous and Andy Gardner) never let us down last year with their album Headtrash, the single ‘Shifting Gears‘ (the Stanton Warriors remix) or contributions to the ‘Best Of’ compilation, 10 Years Of Finger Lickin’ or the fantastic Acid Trax Edit on The Art Of Acid.
‘Beat Myself Up’ is a throw back to the vocoder funk of Zapp of the 80′s (remember ‘Computer Love‘?) and the Plumps’ Night Remix takes it too the limit. Now I thought that Roger Troutman was the expert of such vocal deviancy but apparently not. Notwithstanding Peter Kay’s piss take skit on the art (as on Kay’s ‘Pop Factor’ follow-up for Xmas), Lee and Andy tracked down the authority on the voice box at the University of Pennsylvania to a certain Professor M. who lectures on the subject! The resultant remix has less bounce to the ounce but more deep synth bass-line electro jackin’ feel which is just what you need at the start of the year (also, see Mini Jack).
Due to the vocoder effect, the acapella version is a real winner and there’s an interesting mix in there for some imaginative DJ. But getting back to the electro boogie beat, the b-side ‘London Street Music’, has more of a house feel a la old skool rave; think Arcadion without the go-go mixed up with Cassette Jam’s ‘Don’t Lose Control‘ and you’ve got the idea how these guys rock the joint.
These guys don’t stop gigging just because they spent Christmas in Oz or that they’ve been booked up for Snow Bombing in Maerhoefen, Austria (now in its 10th year!) so even though it’s January, see them beat themselves up whenever they’re near your town.
