Students of Norwegian nu-disco will know that Ytre Rymden Dansskola translates as ‘Outer Space Dance School’ and their self-titled debut album, is an education!
From Prins Thomas’ Full Pupp label, the ones that recently brought us the mighty disco-dub of ‘Skanken’ by Mental Overdrive, Ytre Rymden Dansskola (aka Jarle Br?•then, Marius V?•reid) bring us their take on deep house crossed with nu-space disco on the outer limits of jelly fish alien starship technology
With the psychedelic prog rock jam funk madness of Celestial Mass, Disco Discharge: Disco Classics, the Future Disco crew and Eskimo Recordings’ Cosmic Balearic Beats, these guy bring you back to the dancefloor where the spirit of Jean-Michel Jarre is ready to boogie as if he was Frankie Knuckles, Shep Pettibone and Larry Levan all mixed in one.
Those with sharp eyes and ears will recall Ytre Rymden Dansskola’s ‘landing’ on this planet was a Prins Thomas edit of ‘Kjappfot’ (as heard on Pete Tong Essential mix) and was previously released on a 12″ with ‘Magadrag’.
These two tracks stand out along with another previous 12″ track, ‘Afterski’. Possibly due to their length, the duo gets their sound scapes into a groove that just sound so good. ‘Magadrag’ and ‘Afterski’ come in at a whoppin’ 8 minutes plus and both sound glorious in this setting; particularly ‘Afterski’ that’s a frosty as a Nordic cross country ski trip before it goes slightly Italo-nu jazz. And we’re even promised a couple of more 12′s that’ll have your favourite Norwegian remixers at the controls.
Apart from the last track, the dub-skanked ‘Over Og Ut’, I’ve no idea what the titles translate as but I do know that this is modern nu-jazz disco for the hypnotic dub fused dance junkie; especially feelin’ the ‘Boogie Bus’ at the moment.
This Full Pupp (not sure what that translates as either) in their 3 year history have so far brought us diskJokke, Todd Terje, most recently Blackbelt Andersen and for a 101, get their double CD compilation of ‘Greatest Hits’ that came out last year.
Nu-disco is as daft a genre name as nu-jazz but when the music is a good as Ytre Rymden Dansskola it’ll outlast the name calling; who’s up for gong back to school and get some proper dance lessons? Breakfast in heaven, disco in space-types.
