One of the titles of the year but can veteran Marcos Valle produce one of the albums of the year – you bet as he’s estatic about this!
Rio’s original beach boy hasn’t gone for some strange George Gershwin re-invention a la Brian Wilson for fourth original recording the Far Out Recordings label, but he and main cohorts, producer Daniel Maunick (son of Incognito’s Paul ‘Bluey’ Maunick, don’t forget his their new 30th Anniversary album release Transatlantic RPM); recorded, mixed, and co- produced by David Brinkworth (Harmonic 33); horn and string arrangements by Jesse Sedoc, couldn’t resist a celebration of his 60 years in music.
The first five tracks take you to the bossa jazz that he excels at and has found him being recorded by the extremes of Sinatra (as a small plug for Frank’s estate, the version of ‘The Girl From Ipanema’ from Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim was a surprise hit at Jazz Chronicles this month), Bebel Gilberto (as recently seen at Big Chill) and old hip-hop eyes Jay Z has sampled him also.
‘Vamos Sambar’ and ‘Bai?£o Maracat??’ are particularly cool and hot (all at the same time).that could have come from a 21 year old Valle (who, at that age wrote the bossa classic ‘Summer Samba (So Nice)’ that was a big hit for Walter Wanderley in 1967).
And after the 60s, Valle moved with the times and was happy to mix a bit of Brazilian pop and psychedelia in the 70s and there’s touches of it here with ‘Novo Acorde (Reprise)’.But, regular Far Out Recordings fans and readers will don’t that it you mix some synths, serious jazzdance piaio and Jesse Sedoc’s horn you’ve got a ‘TUNE!’ and the title track is that and more! Could I say it’s as good 2010′s ‘Jazz Carnival’? Well, it’s pretty close.
As an quick aside, I was a pretty late adopter of the iPod and it’s most unlikely I’ll be getting an iPhone4 but the other week I had borrowed one with the Jazz FM app on it and there was Mike Chadwick on Friday night playing a track from this album and getting all his live tour dates in a muddle (see below). So if you have/are iPhone bound, really recommend the Jazz FM app for the ever savvy Mike Chadwick.
Talking of old stars, if Miami Vice was set on the beaches of Rio and there was no crime element, the soundtrack wouldn’t be far off ’1985′ and then next track, ‘Esphera’ has a “ba, ba, baaa” vocal that could be soft porn to Latin advert for Nimble (a 60/70s white bread for weight watchers).
‘Eu Vou’ brings us back to reality with sweeping strings and jazzy vibes (there’s a bit of old skool jazz-funk Icognito bass line going on) but the best is saved ’til last with a far to short keyboard/synth jam-chill out called ’1975′ (the Metro’s Lisa Scott is another fan of this one) and the instrumental bonus track of ‘Vamos Sambar’ – those strings are heavenly.
If you can get to see this guy on tour, you won’t be disappointed as he’s classic and Far Out all at the same time – I’m totally Est?°tica!
