V/A – The World Ends: Afro Rock & Psychedelia In 1970s Nigeria

Why The World Ends?…The latest title from Soundway Records features 32 electrifying and funk laden grooves from the sound of a generation attempting to pick up the pieces after the devastation of the Nigerian civil war.

Musically, it’s a heady mix of psychedelic inspried rockers like of Hendrix, Grateful Dead and Santana giging further up the coast from Next Stop…Soweto Vol.2, Funk & Organ Grooves From The Townships 1969-76 going funky Afro with a Nuggets meets Black Monk Time and Coming From Reality.
And to side track a little, not only has got Presenta Flowering Inferno in session tonight (with tracks from their fantasic new album Dog With A Rope no doubt) but also Hugo Mendez of Sofrito Sound System (and much more); definitely worth a listen tonight as I suspect they’ll be playing The World Ends tunes as well as the last release Palenque Palenque: Champeta, Criolla & Afro Roots in Columbia 1975-91 on Soundway.
Like the Palenque compilation, it’s so tricky to pick out tracks as they are all so good but if you’ve ever wondered why the Soundway label is called Soundway, perhaps Wrinkars Experience’s ‘Soundway’ is a clue.
For the last word on this one, back to Peterson “it’s a double CD on Soundway” – you need say no more.
