V/A – Watergate 06 (dOP)

Brilliant! the new Watergate has been selected by “the saviours of ”, Clement Zemstov, Damien Vandesande and Jonathan Illel (aka dOP) and this mix is one of the best!

Now that’s saying something as the last one was by Ellen Allien and the other precedessors are Sebo K (see Watergate 05),Konrad Black (see Watergate 03), Sascha Funke with Watergate 02 and Onur ?ñzer starting the series off.
A quick check of the tracklisting and you’ll note that most of the 13 tracks by [AN Other] & dOP! That’s often a worry as it can go horribly wrong being a bit self-indulgent on a mixtape (and mentioning no names, there’s a few Fabric Live mixes that have fallen flat using this tattic) but no worries here though. After all, they did have two tracks of their own on Sebo K’s Watergate and only this week, Radio 1′s were bigging them up and he’s booked them up for his Worldwide in Sete this year.
.
They are quickly into their stride with the ‘live’ dOP opener as they set the scene with ‘The Dust’ and whilst you’re thinking, there’s nothing special with ‘Les Fils Du Calvaire’, half-way there’s some Gallic “aahhhhhhhhhh” vocals and a tad sax solo. ‘Before You Go’ keeps a in the house although it doesn’t break stride as a hypnotic banger with a thumpin’ bassline that’s almost dub.
Other highlights are Mathias Kaden’s ‘The Ceremony’ that keeps Afro-jazz theme going whilst on its way to a samba in the Frankfurt quarter of Dalston). Heavy stuff.and it gets heavier with the more Gallic (that’s Gallic not garlic) breath throb of 4×4 ‘Carte Blanche’ (for GCSE French students)
And if you’re hanking for for housey Gotan Project-espque remix, this doesn’t start like that but ‘’ breaks into all its accordion tango glory (rememebering the legend Astor Piazzolla).
So by half way, you get the feeling that we’ve only been warmed up and something special is going to happen; well, it’s not Deep Throat, down in the ‘Glory Hole’ there’s some dirty ‘mosquito’ synths – ouch; these lot are swarming like the overproof rum has just been spilt on Bob Fosse (“Let’s dance” as many have said in the past).
The ‘Glory Hole’ intro is a bit of a break from the full-on-ness of it all but it keeps on building for ‘Deaf Wagrant’ deep less-bang leftfield modern classic dream-home (house).
So why haven’t I heard ‘Play, Play Play’ before? You’ll find of this in a Acker Bilk at Christmas – so extreme!
If you know about the Motor City Drum Ensemble, you’ll know that the MCDE (whether on ‘Raw Cut’ releases or on the remix) has got minimal techno sorted which then get flipped into ‘Candy Floss’ on the beach before dOP say goodbye with a track called ‘Goodbye’.
Yet another brilliant Watergate session; as they say, “House, House and more House” – dOP are our saviours!
