Chicken Lips - Clicks, Acid 'n' Disco

The latest release has been compiled and mixed by Steve Kotey who is one third of Chicken Lips. You can guess from their name, these guys are into fun. But does the CD justify the title Trust the DJ? In this case, there's no problem so throw out your worn out 70s disco compilation from Sainsbury's. Here's some hot stuff to get the party started.

The CD can be split into three 'zones'. Zone One is a funky disco house. The opening track is Maurice Fulton's mix of 'Vacuum Jackers' by ICube and is the wickedest bass line I've heard since Chic's Bernard Edwards hung up his Rotosound Swing Bass 66s. And there's no let up with a Carl Craig dub mix of Moskow Disco by Telex and Chicken Lips' mix of Headman's 'It Rough'. He says in the sleeve notes, 'It Rough' has made people go bonkers when he's played it at clubs all over Europe. I don't doubt it.

Room Two edges towards electronic Kraftwerkness, such as Zonagamin's remix of 'Future' by Cut Copy, Chicken Lips' own 'Blanc Tape' and the quirky Matthew Dear 'Pinch & Pillage'.

'Dum Funk' by the Electronic Boogie Band opens the door of Room Three. It's a sort of mash of the two previous rooms with 4x4 leanings. Ignition's 'Love Is War' (another Chicken Lips remix) is a Chicago House style anthem whilst the CD is finished off in current vogue 'no wave' disco revival style of !!! [pronounced "chk chk chk"] with 'Instinct'.

So some of the biggest underground club tunes with top dance remixers coming to the surface on a single commercial mix CD. The full 17 tracks are nearly 75 minutes of non-stop dancing (or for your head if you prefer). Hectic thoroughly enjoyed it. Rating 5 out of 5.

And it's worth a peek at the back catalogue. For example, Patrick Forge's PF03 (TTDJ039) finds the Kiss 100 man has put together an album mix of eclectic 'cosmic energy' ranging from the Lonesome Echo Production's 'Celebration Dance' (which features Nana Vasconcelos) to the 2003 classic, 'Search For The Sun' by Xantonè Blacq. And he's got the added bonus of being in Da Lata so also included is their massive 'Serious' which features Bembe Segue and the Da Lata Remix of Gabin's 'Azul Anil'. Twelve great tracks in total.

And if you can see echoes of Mr. Gilles Peterson, there's no surprise that he started the whole series off. He's done five of these compilations to date. The last one being GP05 – Eclectic Sessions Vol. 2.

And there's loads more DJ trustees such as Dr. Bob Jones, Phil Asher and Rob da Bank.

Have faith, DJs know best.
