Skalpel - 'Break Out'

Skalpel are Marcin Cichy and Igor Pudlo, who are DJs/producers from Wroclaw. The latest vinyl 12" is called 'Break Out' and was released at the end of last month. It contains five versions of 'Break In'. This is the second 'single' taken from their self-titled album. The first single '1958' was just a superb modern 60s modal sound so it's hard to think how it could be bettered.

Apart from encouraging new talent, maybe this is where Ninja Tunes got the idea for a remix competition? The winner kicks off the b-side, the Backini remix. With a background feeling of milk floats with sirens, it's moody with strings and a booming bass, mildly apocalyptic.

The runners up are all included. Poland's Michal Paradowski's remix sambas down the Wroclaw back streets to find a gypsy violinist busking in the shadows with the pigeons just about waking up to their Cinematic Orchestra tape-looped dawn. The J's remix (Jeremy Joshua from Australia) is the most dance-floor-friendly of the lot and jolly by comparison. Skalpel's own remix goes modal-minimalist in more of a Gotan land low-level scat shuffle strangeness direction.

My favourite version is the UK's Dr. Rubberfunk remix. It's more of a Baker Brothers style with that great acoustic bass, fake applause and guitar wah peddle of a very late nite club. One to keep coming back to.

The A-side starts with a "Reconstructed by The Amalgamation of Soundz" version of 'Low'. The original of 'Low' is taken from the album and also appeared the first CD/12" '1958'. I've been looking out for this new version since Gilles Peterson played last May! It's worth the wait. There are hints of old Pink Floyd, the horn tips its hat to Miles and part broken Cinematic Orchestra in such a way that you can't argue with the spoken sample, 'this is some very beautiful music'.
