Viennese Remix Round Up

Regular Fly readers will know that Hectic likes to keep an eye on the Viennese scene. Hectic wraps up various releases from round town.

mega blast remix

The hot news is that the Weisz/Wagner duo that were responsible for 'UFO In Brazil / Inside' on Afro Art have been signed up by Kruder & Dorfmeister's G-Stone under their other pseudonyms of Makossa & Megablast to transform 'Find out' by Rodney Hunter. The original reggae tune is now a deeply twisted space dropped dance floor shaker and the stand out track for me on the 12". The vocals are by ex-Rockers Hi Fi, Farda P and for the sake of historical completeness during my recent feature on Fly with Glyn Bush, it was Farda P in his Hi Fi days that first called Glyn 'Bigga' and the name stuck. [Sorry, I digress].

The other three tracks are remixes of "Take A Ride" which is also from the album 'The Hunter Files'. Dublex Inc. (Pulver) concentrate on the disco beat and bass. André Lodemann goes into a Detroit house groove. And top remix favourites Fauna Flash who are Roland Appel and Christian Prommer (being both two thirds of Trüby Trio without Rainer Trüby or Voom:Voom without Peter Kruder). They've gone for an updated disco boogie approach.

On the subject of Fauna Flash, Compost Records have announced this week that they have DJ-mixed their best remixes into a CD to be called Worx. It's said to be 70 minutes of "house, latin, techy stuff, 80s references, sublime acid-esque sounds" including many of their brand new remixes for Rodney Hunter, Megablast, Abdullah Ibrahim, Marsmobil and Klaus Doldinger.

So where can you get a brand new remix of Megablast's 'Jupita' by the Fauna Flash guys? It's on a 'Limited Edition' 12" out on La Rosière Records. Not surprisingly, having such great source material as 'Jupita', it has helped them get the best seven minutes of Detroited dancefloored flamenconess bass bounce you are ever likely to hear. It's a grower. As is Stereotyp's remix on the b-side. Gilles Peterson has been complimentary about this 12", "very close to being a perfect package! Awesome tracks, great production. Will get rotation on my radio show & DJ gigs".

Another 12" that Mr. Peterson has supported on his Worldwide Radio show is the Peter Kruder remix of Stereotyp meets Al'Haca, 'Blaze 'n Cook'. Personally, as one of my top tunes of last year, I feared the worst when I heard of a remix project but I should have realised all was safe in Peter Kruder's hands. The original electro-nuskool-ragga-bizniz has been treated in a less obvious disco style than the Fauna Flashes above. The Radio Slave remix is closer to the original version but not so good. The less than promisingly named PK's Jiggy is the best of the four in a stripped 100mph ethnic-plink style.

So that's a quick 12" whirl around the best of an apparently fairly incestuous Viennese remix muso community and I'm eagerly awaiting even more goodies from the mixing desk to come.
