Although drawing on a million different interests, New Birth feels tight and has the smoothest collection of sounds and yet it flows with sincere ease. The sheer scope of samples, beats and rhythms begs the question, is there any limit to this progressive talent? A certain element of lounge cool creeps through in places, leaving the overall flavour of the record a little nostalgic but largely grabbing your ears like a dinner lady. With guest vocals from Lil Sci and the big band Build an Ark there is often a little something, which compliments Amoncontact's feel and joy. Sounding minimalisticly electronic yet diversely heavy, New Birth drives through the loose arrangement of words and sounds of the term, 'instrumental hip hop'. Offering a range of rhythms and evolving beats it feels like the sound has another reason to exist, to take over our thoughts, even if it is for a mere 34 minutes of exploration... New Birth is released on Ninja Tune in May Links: |
