Impro. @ Cherry Jam No. 4, 'Bossa Futura vs K Scope'. June 1st - London

More from the monthly night at Cherry Jam which started in March under the banner 'Musical impulses for creative people'
cherryjam.gif

The opening night featured Tom Arthurs of the F-ire Collective (who have two tracks included on this month's 'Jazzwise' -- see links below), which was followed in April by the Vincent Trio with Dom Servini on DJing duties. Word had got around by the third session and it was full house for Jennifer Moore (vocals) and the "strange fruit" jazz experimentalist Maki Mannami (Bambola).

It's a relatively small club, so the idea is to get there early for the next one on 1st June. Billed as 'Bossa Futura vs K Scope' with Jennifer Moore returning and DJ sets from resident St.John de-Zilva and Further Out Recordings' Richard E.

Bossa Futura are a new Brazil-centred duo of sometime Nucleus guitarist Mark Wood (credits also include João Donato, Hermeto Pascoal and Phil Manzanera) and his Colombian wife Anamaria on vocals. They will be performing some Brazilian classics supported by double bass and drums plus original material in advance of their first release, 'Sol y Luna'.

'Sol y Luna' is likely to be Further Out Recordings biggest tune to-date. Already played on Searching the other week, it's a delicate samba shuffler with Mark's subtle guitar and Anamaria sounding as lovely as Nanar of Break Reform. It's one equally as good for the club as it is at home. If you liked 'Do You Love Me Too' by Solar Apple Quarktette, you're going to love this one. This is my spring, summer and autumn tune of the year already and I'm eager to get the 12" vinyl version.

If that's not enough, the in-house band of K-Scope inspired by Geoff Woolley featuring drums, rhodes, programming, double bass and sax and flute this time from John Telfer. The K-Scope crew have written some awesome material for Jennifer Moore and also be prepared for a cover of a beautiful Nucleus song called 'Images'. My ears are aching in anticipation. You'll find the original on the album, Roots. By the way, congrats to Brit Jazz legend Ian Carr who recently celebrated his 72nd Birthday.

After many years of DJing at seminal clubs such as the Bass Clef in Hoxton and Blue Note to Fabric, resident DJ St. John de-Zilva will additionally be celebrating the birth of his son. Richard E is also a member of the aforementioned Solar Apple Quarktette who's making his second Impro. appearance on the decks after his successful debut last month. Be warned, he's got some big tunes in his box (see below).

If you haven't caught up with this event yet, the idea is a gathering of all things nu jazz with an emphasis on improvisation. Sounds like a must and make a note that it's on the first Wednesday of the month (i.e. 1st June, 6th July etc).
