Coldcut - 'Mr Nichols'

Before I got to grips with Treva Whateva’s new album, one review I spotted concluded that as Coldcut hadn’t done anything for 8 years, you might as well jump into bed with Treva’s album.

Well I’m not sure about that as Treva’s album, Music’s Made Of Memories stands on its own. And if the Treva Whateva reviewer hadn’t been so quick to jump to conclusions, he would have found out that the wait is now nearly over. New Coldcut material is going to be released in early in the New Year on an album called Soundmirrors.

So will it sound like Treva’s album? Not by the looks of our first sneak preview. Jon and Matt played the backing track to ‘Mr. Nichols’ to rapper/poet/rock star/actor Saul Williams and they must have been delighted with the lyric he has since produced. It’s dark, moody and depressingly suicidal. It’s supposed to reflect what’s happening to the salaried classes. It’s recently reported again that white collar ‘jobs for life’ are no longer the norm, particularly in Japan and Germany where they were they were thought of as guaranteed in the past. This is bringing about many personal hardships and potential political change. However, you may have your own interpretation as to what the lyrics are about.

What with the imminent release of Robert Mitchell’s Panacea new album Trust, is poetry the next new rock and roll? Unlikely, but Williams and Mitchell’s guest, Eugene Skeef, are clearly fine exponents.

In the spring issue Straight No Chaser, Charlie Dark interviews Saul Williams and Saul has recently been gigging in London. Reviews seem to have been generally positive (see links below) so a good, if unexpected, choice by the Coldcut team.

So why the long wait for the new Coldcut album? We’ve not been told. What is obvious though is that they haven’t lost their urge to be innovative and visionary. Looks like a good start to 2006, but if you’re in Japan, live dates are coming very soon to coincide with the release of the first single, ‘Everything Is Under Control’. If only it were.

November Live Dates:
25/11/05 - Makuhari Convention Centre, Tokyo, Japan
26/11/05 - ATC Hall, Osaka, Japan

Treva Whatever - ‘Music Is Made Of Memories” “while it doesn’t offer anything Coldcut hasn’t already, it fills a void for Ninja Tune addicts who have been waiting for new material from the duo for over half a decade”. David Jeffries AMG
