Following the celebrated release of their hit album ‘Dimanche à Bamako’ and in advance of their live date at Shepherds Bush Empire on 29th September, don’t miss this unique opportunity to see Amadou & Mariam as they host a special screening plus Q+A exclusive to the Ritzy.
The hour-long documentary about the making of the album takes us on a behind-the-scenes trip to Mali, to witness the couple at home and their musical encounter with the legendary artist and producer Manu Chao. The music provides the lifeblood of the film, featuring the hits ‘Sénégal Fast Food’, ‘La Realité’ and ‘Coulibaly’, plus a rare, unreleased live song by Manu Chao ‘Kira’.
Amadou Bagayoko and Mariam Doumbia have been making music together since they first met and fell in love at the Institute for Young Blind People in Bamako in the mid-1970s. While their music is based in a Malian-style blues, it has evolved to combine a diversity of influences including African rhythms, sweet soul harmonies and ’60s Memphis guitar.
Amadou & Mariam have been nominated for a 2005 MOBO Award as Best World Music Act. This is the second European awards ceremony to honour the Malian duo – earlier this year the couple won a prestigious Les Victoires de la Musique, the French equivalent of the Grammys. Indeed, ‘Dimanche à Bamako’ is currently number two in the French chart, the highest position an African act has ever achieved in any European album chart’.
