V/A - A Slice Of Paradise, Volume One (BiggaBush, Disk 1 of 5)

This is Volume 1 of a Slice of Paradise and it’s a whopping 5-CD set. Superbly packaged, it covers five differenct DJs (one CD each)

V/A - A Slice Of Paradise, Volume One (BiggaBush, Disk 1 of 5)

The idea was for DJs to spend a week as residents at the Xiringuito Beach Bar in Alicante, Spain so that they can “explore all their musical tastes and influences before handing the baton to the next.” What a great idea for a project and the result is ideal for packing on the flight to the sun for your holidays. However, it’s also very good if you’re staying at home as the selectors are:

Glyn ‘BiggaBush’ Bush - Disc 1 (Cantaloupe Melon)
Nick Matthews of Best Kept Secret - Disc 2 (Water Melon)
Gav Smith of Pantone - Disc 3 (Pineapple)
Enrique Domenech - Disc 4 (Orange)
Ben Mono of Compost - Disc 5 (Kiwi Fruit)

Each CD starts with the spoken intro to Terry Callier’s ‘A Slice Of Paradise’ and then the rest is up to the DJ. BiggaBush delves into downtempo ambient roots with heavy bass dub giving this CD a very different feel to the other four in the set. Glyn’s knob twiddling stamp is all over this one.

Many of the tracks are either by him, either as BiggaBush or Lightning Head, or as a member of Rockers Hi-Fi or as a master remixer. Where he has chosen other people’s material, as you would expect, he’s chosen well. Such as Dolphin Boy’s ‘On The Ceiling’ — a Blue Room style chill. In a similar vein, is the Marnie track and ‘Stolen Summer’ being a cover version of the 60s hit ‘Summer The First Time’ by Bobby Goldsboro. See full tracklisting below.

‘Look For A Spark’ dates back 10 years when Glyn was in Rockers Hi-Fi and was originally on the same album as the classic ‘Push Push’ (which has recently been covered by the jazz project led and arranged by Matthias Vogt [re:jazz] on INFRACom! with remixes by Mortorcity and Soulpatrol).

Glyn himself has a reputation for leftfield remix action and he includes his rework of Punk Rock’s Roxy Club favourite by Tappa Zukie (MPLA), half of Zimpala’s (David Walters), ‘Mesi Bon Due’ and his own Deep Eastwood, getting some Fat Freddy’s Drop remixing from DJ Fitchie.

The CD has a good feel as it builds to a high with ‘Bassdrum & Snare’ off the Lightning Head Studio Don album (given a ‘Roots’ makeover) and the Lightning Head version of ‘L’Orient Est Roots’ which mixes your dub roots with bits of North Africa and Mexican brass band (lovin’ that leftfield stuff).

So when is the follow up album to Studio Don coming out? Apparently, he’s in the studio working on it with the vocal talents of Monterria and Farda P in a reggae-Latin flavour Studio Don Afro funk stylee; can’t wait. Prepare for more funk fusion of Jamaican, Nu-Yorican and Brazilian styles with a soundclash of dub, salsa and batucada. So global!

In addition to A Slice of Paradise there’s more Glyn releases in the offing with Up Bustle & Out’s ‘Zuzuku’s People’ (Lightning Head Remix) out on Routes and Ibiza Chill (Ministry of Sound) with BiggaBush’s ‘The Bells’ (as seen on TV!)

And is there no stopping him as November sees one of the best tracks from BiggaBush Free released on 12”, ‘This River’ will include versions by Glyn himself, Tweak, and hot-jazz-hop producer of the moment Nostalgia77 (Stereo Deluxe).

Another one to watch out for is Glyn’s DJ mix on of Les Ambassadeurs with Raphael Marrionneau due out in December (also Stereo Deluxe).

Returning to a ‘Slice Of Paradise’, BiggaBush has provided us with a fruit cocktail of electronic dubby stuff that’s nearly as good a going to see him live, very highly recommended as he’s got a box load of special tunes and we’re going to hear more of Glyn’s role in the release of Peak’s ‘Get Carter’ on Afro Art. Recent gigs included Fishseeksbicycle (who are having a party this Saturday with man about town Chris Pedley, see below) and here’s some more of BiggaBush’s recent and forthcoming gigs:

1 Sept - Mandalay, Hamburg, Germany
2 Sept - Basel, Switzerland
3 Sept - Dampfzentrale, Bern, Switzerland
16 Sept - Baghdad Café, Lodz, Poland
17 Sept - Zyszek, Poland
