So how did you get involved in ‘A Slice Of Paradise’?
I had been down in the South of Spain in the winter of 2003 to DJ and the promoter (Enrique Domenech) was always telling me how special the Xiringuito Beach Bar is in the summer and that I needed to come and see it.
How did you get on?
The next summer I went over to play Xiringuito and there were two bars at the time and we managed to play all day and all night.
The tracks you’ve picked aren’t particularly laid back, how did you chose them?
I think the whole CD as a concept is a kind of day in the life of with the pace moving through the gears on each CD with a different DJ, I have played pretty well peak time there before like on the CD but also mellower in the day.
You slipped in a couple of Pantone releases (‘In the Morning’ and ‘Faro’) and a couple of Spiritual South remixes, is there a particular link with Spiritual South?
Not really, I just like their music and they just seem to get stronger and stronger.
Spiritual South/Gerardo Frisina watchers, look out for ‘Beyond The Moon’ 12” on Schema but back to Gav and Latin beats, how to you get to know S.U.M.O?
I met their old manager who came to my office and I really liked the music. They were called something else then. Then their manager moved on but I kept in touch with the guys and got to meet them when I played in Stockholm. I hung out with them in their studio and we built a relationship from there. They really are talented guys and work in a really unique way. I know when I need a solid remix, when the track is right, they are the guys to call.
Apart from Xiringuito and Stockholm, where else would you recommend for a special night out?
There are some really special places where I have been to a few times that I have had a real great connection with the people and where I’ve had some great times but especially ‘Club Loop’ (Tokyo) and, of course, my own party ‘True Spirit’ in Brighton.
And what’s next on Pantone?
Jafrosax with Vikter Duplaix (In The Morning) is a fresh track. The full length album, A New Standard Of The Future will be out this winter and Lonesome Echo Production is rumoured to be in the studio.
Lonesome Echo Production (aka Yasushi Ide) had a great album out a couple of years ago on Disorient which was a sub-label of Mr. Bongo but no time to go into that as Gav’s off to the airport to catch a flight for the Winter Tour (see below).
So whilst Gav’s at the Xiringuito Beach Bar in Alicante playing “a snapshot of 21st century global underground”, I’ll put on CD3 again.
