Boozoo Bajou - Take It Slow

The new 12” from Boozoo Bajou features remixes by Bugz In The Attic’s Seiji and one by Mousse T…

Boozoo Bajou - Take It Slow

It also contains the original version taken from the latest album, Dust My Broom as favoured by Mixmaster Morris.

Boozoo Bajou are the duo of Peter Heider and Florian Seyberth and the term ‘Dust My Broom’ means to “make a clean sweep” and marks the beginning of something new. Taking in influences from soul, reggae, ambient and blues it’s not going to appeal to all. The first 12” was ‘Killer’ with the vocal duties taken by Top Cat (with Funky Lowlives and King Britt remixes). You’ll spot a bit of ‘I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here! theme tune but otherwise very much the dancehall uptempo dubby jazzy stuff in a BiggaBush way of doing things (Boozoo Bajou moved to !K7 from BiggaBush’s Label, Stereo Deluxe).

The guests chosen for the album are somewhat varied from Berlin based blues singer Wayne Martin, Ben Weaver (who’s a little ‘Tom Waits’ here), American singer-songwriter Willie Hutch who sadly died recently and Boozoo Bajou’s favourite, country singer Tony Joe White.

And while it’s almost impossible to be a completionist with Fat Freddy’s Drop member’s extra curricula activities, the added bonus of Joe Dukie on ‘Take It Slow’ with roots legend U-Brown who was the MC for King Tubby’s Sound System is an added bonus and an obvious choice for the 12” release.

Very much a Fred Freddy feel so Dukie fits in hand in glove while U-Brown is Djing as if it was 30 years ago and there’s a echo of some studio EFX used in the classic, ‘I Am A Levi’ by Ijahman Levi.

The Mousse T remix gets a big retreatment with horns and strings where U-Brown doesn’t get a look-in on this version. Is this soulful? You bet it is. Sexy Sunday night soul sessions of the mid seventies spring to mind. Smooth.

Now Gilles Peterson has played a track off the forthcoming Bugz In The Attic album (early 2006) twice in the last two weeks and it’s clear that there’s maturity in the broken sound going on. But for those that like the trusted Bugz imprint, Seiji is on the case with this remix. So you’re thinking, how a track called ‘Take It Slow’ with sultry chill guitar and mellowed out keys get broken Seiji style? It’s a bit mash of U-Brown and Dukie’s vocals and the monster ‘Booty La La’ backing track. Bit too advanced for the ‘reggae and dub nite’, but the head nodders at CO-OP et al will get it, especially the instrumental version.

The two 12 inches released to date are not particularly representative of the album but all are worth checking out.
