Re:Edit’s knobs are red hot after mixing Bowie and James Brown on Vol. 2, this time he’s found a little known classic from the vaults in American Gypsy’s ‘Inside Out’ and Ms. Badu with ‘Bag Lady’. Philly’s nu-soul Badu nicked bits of Issac’s Hayes’ ‘Bumpy’s Lament’ to put in her bag on the original classic tale of life on the streets. Badu might be lambasted for her choice of names for her offspring on MTV, but there’s no denying she’s got a voice that was gifted from above the skies. This new version has gone all funked up tripwise on us and it’s super sleek, featuring some mellow guitar. Just let it go as you feel the vibe for instant stress release. ‘Bag Lady’ was on the album Mama’s Gun following the massive Baduizm. That album also contained another track much loved by the mashup community, ‘On & On’. Many versions exist but worthy of special mention is a green 7” that was doing the rounds last year that incorporated Quincy Jones’, “Summer In The City” (which a certain Mr. Peterson favoured). So from one internationally known artist to American Gypsy! Who are these guys. ‘Inside Out is a ‘lost’ classic that’s thankfully found. A super funky bass riff and vocals with the strings and orchestration similar to Vol. 1 in this series. This track will literally turn you inside out with joy. 70s funky soul with bits you’ll recognise. This 12” rework series started with a stunner and just seems to be getting better. Clearly gaining the respect they deserved, you don’t want to let this one pass you by. High Hectic recommendation. Reviewed: American Gypsy / Erykah Badu - R.E.-Edits Volume Three Cat. No. REEDIT03 Love this, also try: Volume 2: “The RE-EDITS crew strike again with devastating remixes of JAMES BROWN’s “HOT” which notoriously borrowed BOWIE’S “FAME” riff (or was it the other way around) and DAVID BOWIE’s “GOLDEN YEARS”. Massively funky re-edits destined to do some dancefloor damage!” Volume 1: Love Unlimited Orchestra / Dwele - Midnight Groove (Re-Edit) / Affinity (Re-Edit) “Quality (hip hop style) edit of Love Unlimited Orchestra’s slow dangerous disco goodie ”Midnight Groove” and a re-edit of Dwele’s ”Affinity” for maximum club use”.
