Ingrid Laubrock / Ife Tolentino - Forensic in tribute to Chico Buarque

When Ingrid Laubrock visited Poole towards the end of last year, the saxophonist exposed her two musical sides to the packed house.

The first set was a Brazilian affair with Ife Tolentino (guitar/vocals) and Ben Davis (cello). A somewhat odd trio you would assume but Ingrid showed how multitalented she was as she concentrated on her singing, in Portuguese no less, which was a surprise to me after her appearance with Ben in the F-ire Collective.

This was prior to the release of Ife’s album Brazil In Black And White, which is a tribute to their favourite Brazilian composer/poet, Chico Buarque. Ife is originally from São Paulo but lived in Rio for 12 years. He told me that he’s been in the UK since 1992 and has taken his acoustic guitar everywhere form North America to Greece. ‘Para Torros’ (For Everyone) is a homage to all the different states in Brazil and was one of the highlights.

Back in Poole, in comparison to Ingrid’s ‘Latin’ side, she described the second set as her “dark side”. In addition to Ingrid on saxes, the band were Ben Davis (cello), Larry Bartley (bass), Barry Green (piano) and for the first time, “but definitely not the last”, Stuart Ritchie (drums). The drummer’s seat may vary on future gigs between Seb Rochford (F-ire Collective, Acoustic Ladyland) and Gene Calderazzo.

Ingrid’s own album Forensic starts with an avant-garde investigation, ‘Forensic Experts’ and it sets the tone for the mix of classically trained, free-jazz post-bop. She also played ‘Monologue Man’, possibly for the journalists in the audience as it’s “about those who have mouths but no ears.”

She explained that ‘Stone Lions’ was written during a period when she was looking after a friend’s friend who urged her to play whilst she was around his house caring for him. This would have made anyone feel better as it builds into a samba-bop.

Funnily enough, Ingrid told me after the show that she’d been to Poole before. Not to perform, but to see one of her heroes, Wayne Shorter. You can see where she gets some of her contemporary jazz inspiration. And talking of which, Selwyn Harris’ piece in Jazzwise ended on an inspirational note, “Laubrook stands as a role model for any budding jazz musician”. I’d say and see the other reviews on her website, check the sounds and gigs. She’s very busy over the next few months with Brighton, Bath and Cheltenham Festivals already booked.
