The Kieran Hebden / Steve Reid project will be appearing at The Scala (Weds 26 April) and Tunng / Juana Molina are at Cargo (Weds, 3rd May). You may recall that Gilles Peterson declared Ried’s Spirit Walk album, the jazz album of 2005. Hebden took part in an eight-man line up and look out for the remake of the anthemic of ‘Lions Of Juda’ (Gilles certainly used the original version). This gig will be promoting their new album The Exchange Session: Vol 1, “where it is just the two of them. Be prepared for free style laptop experimentation combined with Reid’s beats that he’s developed over 40 years playing with everyone from Martha Reeves & The Vandellas (Dancing In The Street), Miles Davis, Fela Kuti, James Brown, Fats Domino, Sun Ra, Peggy Lee, Chaka Khan, Dexter Gordon, Dionne Warwick and many, many more.” Hebden’s Four Tet persona was often mentioned in reviews of Tunng’s first album Mother’s Daughter And Other Songs. This was another album supported by Mr. Peterson and justifiably so as it contained the perfect acoustic guitar’n’folktronica sound. Don’t let the mention of the film ‘The Wicker Man’ put you off but check out ‘People Folk’ and the magnificent, ‘Tale From Black’. The new album is due out on 22nd May, Comments Of The Inner Chorus and hopefully it’ll be as good as the last one. Juana Molina was at the QEH last year much to the delight of our Editor and is back in London to support the release of her new album Son. This one is also coming out on Domino Records and is released the day before the gig. I can’t say I’ve heard much of the other bands lined up under the banner of Eat Your Own Ears but they appear to be an imaginative (and hungry) crew. One to keep whatever remaining ears you have left open for. Links: |
