V/A - 'Chez Le Coiffeur' EP

Even before the Renault TV ad campaigns, was the French nation obsessed with ass-shaking?

V/A - Boutique Chic No. 1 - Chez Le Coiffeur

It would appear that way from this left of centre EP from the underground Parisian club scene. Hairspray meets Euro Trash theme tune as the retro revival continues apace. 60s pop, mambo, breaks, funk and electro lounge all get a seeing to and sit happily on the decks in club or home.

Commentators have compared it to early Dimitri from Paris and DJs who like something a little different are fans of the Boutique Chic nu-wave. Locals like Bertrand Burgalat, DJ BNX (Zimpala) and Kid Loco are joined by Paul Murphy, Fort Knox Five and even King Britt!

But you can see why this has a wide appeal. ‘Brilliantine A Go-Go’ is like a ‘Rock Lobster’ disco mix for hairdressing rappers. C’est tres bien and definitely one for the salon. And informative! I didn’t know hairdressers where “guided by the shape of the head and the features of the face”.

No idea what a ‘Bigoudis Party’ is (Ed. Hair-Curlers) but the clavinet break is a treat in the electro-retro funk upside-your-head groove.

‘Panique Au Salon’ is the Alt.ass-shaker with “scissor” percussion by Johnny Coiffure. Dangerously addictive big beat mambo from George Deligny.

George Delingy (aka Thomas Deligny) is the boss of Stereofiction and the web site tells us that in addition to DJing at Mezzanine de l’Alcazar and Favela Chic he’s worked at the Festival of Cinema in Berlin. The last track is by one of Georges’ customers at the salon, Minimatic. It’s got a touch of Jacques Tati about it and that can’t be a bad thing.

And another plus, the cover by Restez Vivants is a good one paying homage to 50s graphic design.

The website promises further releases such as Lingerie Fine & Belle Dentelle (Fine Lingerie & Lovely Lace), Chhhut… Maison Close (Shhh… House of Ill Repute), Pâtisserie & Gourmandise (Cakes & Sweets).

Something for the weekend? I’d say so. Great fun and you can hear them all at the myspace site (see links below).
