Foreign Beggars - 'Slow Broiled Ilk' |

Favourites of 1Xtra and Radio 1, their hip hop has attracted the attention of LA’s Stones Throw records. Rob da Bank tipped their last single, which featured Stone Throw’s Wildchild and their next single features Madlib’s younger brother OhNo. The 12” is coming out on 8th May so this is an early look. Spitting at a head-nodding pace, it’s got a Roots Manuva feel to it (there’s a great line about snot, of all things). Whilst OhNo adds West Coast weight to the lead track, ‘Backdraft’ and ‘Hot Plate’ are a little more ‘UK’ but equally good. Not sure if the swearing on Hot plate is by guest Dubbledge or one of Foreign Beggars’ rappers, Orifice Vulgatron (great name), Metropolis, Dj NoNames, Beat Boxer Shlomo. The other member of the band is producer Dag Nabbit. Famed for their lively stage appearance, watch out for the video that’ll be on MTV Base and Channel U soon. Fat City was so impressed with the 12”, they’ve got a huge gig lined up at Cargo and Casual Records are also supporting. You’re probably too late to win the competition for a signed copy of ‘Slow Broiled Ilk’ via the Casual Records myspace site but don’t miss out on the rest of the UK tour if you can’t make the Cargo gig (see links below).
