It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Alessandro (mono deluxe) Oliveiro with his nu-jazz-latin 12”s on Perfect Toy (great German label and worth getting anything they’ve released as it’s all quality). So, when Hectic found out he has been working on this beauty with Heidi Vogel, I had to get my hands on it.

Heidi is definitely a cool nu-jazzer with a soulful voice. Prior to ‘Higher Skies’, my favourite was her appearance on the Sun Ra inspired ‘Inner War’ by Likwid Biskit (IG Culture, Kaidi, Vogel, Nik Romillie).

‘Higher Skies’ isn’t as far out as Sun Ra but it is an uplifting leap into the outter reaches of the atmosphere. The drums and percussion lead us into the funky bass and Ms. Vogel is “Way up in higher skies.” This is the future of future jazz with the poetic verses flying in higher consciousness. It’s enough to make you feel lightheaded.

Further Out Recordings broadcast on Radio Saturn but they’ve already got plays on Scanner FM (Barcelona) and The New Jazz Spectrum Radio Show (hey, there’s one or two good tunes in Mr. Dewbury’s show). What these guys are yet to be astounded by is the K-Scope remix.

The Remix! I want to hear this on a big system and see those JazzCotech dancers going ape keeping up with the beats. Is it my imagination or does Ms Vogel sound a little bit angry on this take? Anyway, whilst Alessandro Oliviero is Italian, K-Scope have taken a leaf out of the Schema boys book on this jazzy rework. Nice guitar, wonder if it’s Mark ‘Bossa Futura’ Wood?

Heidi is appearing at Guanabara on the 27th June (the same place as those other space junkies, Max Cole and Planet Rescue on the 11th July) with her own quintet.
