V/A - Get Lost (Damian Lazarus and Mathew Styles) |

Don’t get confused by the cover as this is more the ‘Get Lost’ within yourself than any drink induced aggressive threat. Aggression is definitely off the agenda but equally, it’s not some chill out naval gazing soft option exercise either. Simply put, CD1 is the most coherent deep, minimal, techno house I’ve come across. It’s over 70 minutes long but you would never have thought it, as you just don’t want this mix to end. Seems daft to pick out any particular tracks but stand outs are ‘Sangaol’ by Styro 2000, Und’s ‘Coccopuffs’ and Monolake’s ‘Plumbicion’. Also, how do you get your hands on Rob Mello demo Mix? This CD had some Hectic hammer this week. And don’t forget to turn up ‘How Not To Be A Biscuit’ really loud. You’d think CD two would continue where CD1 left off. There are a couple of my favourite names on the tracklisting. Following on from Anne Wirz remix, we get a reminder of how good Four Tet’s ‘A Joy’ is with the Battles remix. Seriously heavy this one and it fits in with the generally darker mood compared to CD1. Dark like the next track, the seedy ‘Jimmy Had Jane’, the rap on Anaerobic Robots’ ‘Darwin Or Love’ and John Tejada’s ‘Paranoia’. I was surprised then to find one of my favourite tunes, ‘Detroit’ by Moonstarr included. When this originally came out, Moonstarr was in a bit of a purple patch with the remixes of Povo’s ‘Uam Uam’ and John Arnold ‘Style And Pattern (Nuff Version)’ (both 12” only). ‘Detroit’ stands the test of time and is just excellent even if it is a bit lighter than the rest of the CD. David Taylor (who was a big part of Jesse Rose Presents More Than One project) has one or two pseudonyms including Modeler. So it’s no surprise he’s included here, even if ‘Mint Condition’ is a little Flat Eric meets The Clangers in Detroit. Lazarus is certainly a mix master, not only has he compiled a Bugged Out! Suck My Deck album, last month he did his first Radio 1 Essential Mix (check that Hectic-style tracklisting - see links below). Also see Rory of York’s comment which seems just as relevant to Get Lost. And getting back to Get Lost, don’t worry if you don’t recognise many names on CD1 as there are some little revelations and deepening on your mood, it’s the one to go for. CD2 is a strange after-dark affair and it was a good decision not to try an extravagant mix on these tracks. Links: Various - Get Lost (Crosstown Rebels) Cat. No. CRMCD004 Release date: May 2006 |
