Call for Artists - Sauti za Busara Festival, Zanzibar 2007

The fourth edition of the Sauti za Busara music festival will take place in Zanzibar, February 9 -14th 2007; and once again admission is free to all each day before 8pm

Call for Artists - Sauti za Busara Festival, Zanzibar 2007

Held annually, around mid February, the festival brings together people of all ages and backgrounds in an exploration and celebration of the wealth and diversity of Swahili music.

The festival showcases a dynamic mix of music and performing arts groups, mostly from around East Africa, with some specially invited international groups. Centered in the Old Fort on the seafront of historic Stone Town, this year’s festival will also host events in other neighbourhoods of town, and one or two villages close to Zanzibar’s world-famous beach locations.

Call for Artists (deadline end August)
More than one hundred groups have performed at the festival over the past few years including Juma Nature & Wanaume Family TMK, Saida Karoli, Mchinga Generation, Ferooz and Das Nundaz, Eric Wainaina, Ghorwane, The Shrine Synchrosystem, Taffetas, Atongo Zimba, African Revolution Band, Maulidi ya Homu ya Mtendeni, El Tanbura, Seiyun Popular Arts, Culture Music Club, Chibite, Wagosi wa Kaya and many more.

After being spotted at Sauti za Busara, many East African artists have been invited to perform at international festivals around the world, including Afrikali Band, Oya Theatre, Zemkala, Jagwa Music, X Plastaz, Sinachuki Kidumbak and others.

For artists wanting to participate in the 2007 festival, send your applications before end of August. Send your applications by letter or email to reach the office of Busara Promotions (address below). Applications must include recent recordings (audio and/or video), pictures and biography information. If you have a press-kit, then please send this too.

sorry, but the “call for artists” is now well and truely closed.

Our office was inundated with hundreds of applications from music and performing artists wishing to participate. The Festival Selection Committee had a tough but enjoyable job checking out all the recordings and finally deciding the line up. The late nights were well worth the effort and we’re confident that the 2007 programme looks set to be the best ever.

Preparations are going well and anticipation is growing for the 4th edition of Sauti za Busara Music Festival, taking place in Zanzibar 9th- 14th February 2007.

Sauti za Busara (Sounds of Wisdom) Music Festival 2007 will feature:

• Performances: more than forty groups, hailing from Zanzibar, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Moçambique, Mauritius, Zimbabwe, West Africa and Europe
• Carnival Parade
• Film: World Premiere of “As Old As My Tongue: The Myth and Life of Bi Kidude”
• Workshop: Swahili Encounters (Music Fusion)
• Seminar: Marketing East African Music
• Photo Exhibition “Where the Music Takes Me”
• “Busara Xtra” - performances in fringe venues around the island
• Festival Finale: Valentines Day Beach Party til Dawn!
