Africa 2005 - A Year of Celebration

This year the world turns its attention to Africa and in return Africa will show the world its diversity and cultural wealth. Africa 2005 is a programme of events designed to tell the other side of the African story. Fly is proud to be a media sponsor.

The concept of the campaign is to promote, encourage and provide media support for the tangible and positive initiatives of African civil society and the African private sector.

The objective is to highlight actions, events or initiatives that will help overturn preconceptions about Africa.

Africa 2005 will cover the international year of Africa by devoting each week to a different African country (53 weeks / 53 countries).

There will be links from different country pages to features on Fly about artists from those countries.

In addition, a separate but aligned initiative will take place in London to celebrate Africa.

People in the UK will be very aware of Africa in 2005 as the BBC has promised to devote its considerable media resources to a high profile series of events and programmes celebrating the continent. The British Museum and hundreds of other cultural institutions will be organising events to celebrate Africa this year.

Another related event will be E wa jo, an African Arts and Music festival/fair that is aimed at celebrating and promoting the traditions and culture of the African diaspora and it will take place at the Lakeside Shopping Centre, Chafford Hundred, Thurrock on Saturday 31st July 2004.

And it is hoped that Britain's stewardship of both the G8 and the EU will focus minds on Africa and turn that goodwill into concrete advances for the people of Africa.
