Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. Sarr, born in Dakar, Senegal, but resident in France for twenty-five years, has a clear, thin and superbly controlled voice that cuts through the percussion and Larose’s guitars with a haunting elegance augmented by her poetic lyrics. There is nothing forced about the meeting between the two musician’s styles, and the result is a flamenco made even more haunting by the addition of Senegalese vocals. A brief cameo from Youssou N’Dour on ‘Set Luna Djamonodji’ and the loan of the main vocals and a few choice guitar riffs on ‘Yitté’ to Leity M’Baye give extra interest to the already fascinating collaboration. Larose’s guitar work is at times laid-back, at others frantic, but remaining inventive throughout, slipping into jazz as well as the more oft-heard flamenco riffs. The instrumental ‘Flor de mi Secreto’ has a prog jazz feel to it. Of the outstanding tracks is ‘Nimala Djuré’, which is one of the tracks where Sarr’s vocals work in closest proximity with the guitars, clapped percussion and cabassa and cajon. It features some wonderful ambient percussion that builds subtly as Sarr’s singing becomes more insistent. Set Luna is released on No Format. |
