It’s from a wonderful label that releases hip hop, soul, jazz, reggae and more so it might be easy to overlook JBP’s debut 12”. If you did, it’d be a mistake as it is very much Fly’s type of global minimal techno house.

Well in tune with Douglas Pagan and Moodyman’s remix of Arif Tree’s ‘Forgotten Places’ both tracks come highly recommended. ‘Aphrotalk’ has some of the Yoruba of Osunlade about it whilst ‘Amongstone’ is deeper in the beat with some jazz funk keyboards. The strange hovering electronic sound in the background, is the hum of the jungle at night or maybe some defective computer game? Getting really spaced out to this in a Theo Parrish/Sun Ra appreciation type way.

JBP are DJ Sahib and Eiji Takehana (previously known as the Jazz Brothers, check out Talkin’ Loud’s classic album Multidirection Brownswood Workshop) with Yashiro Nara and Nakamura Yusuke. So when not partying in the premier jazz clubs of Tokyo, they are in the studio collaborating with Bill Laswell and John Zorn. Apparently, Mr Nara also runs “Zen and the Art Of…” in Straight No Chaser so these guys are really well-connected.

Talking of with, our friend Dom Servini has reviewed this 12” in the current issue of Straight No Chaser (Spring/Summer 2006) and said “one epic and mesmerising piece of music”. Hard to argue against the great Wah Wah man! Yet another excellent release again on Soul Jazz.
