Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. Brimming with the layered sounds of the sheng (bamboo pipes), the Xiao (recorder) and the Di-Zi (flute) yet delivering a modern edge with the clarinet and saxophone to give its tracks a more nu-jazz feel. Self-proclaimed by Jean Marais (the man behind MoShang) as being the downtempo subgenre of ‘Chinese Chillout’ this album stays true to its intentions and delivers exactly what it sets out to; simple, luxurious, oriental chillout. The vocals are scarce but complimentary to the tracks that they’re found in, accompanying the raw, yet hauntingly soft sound of the Chinese instruments. Also sung in English, Chillout Dynasty challenges its listener whilst impressing with the use of Chinese opera vocals and chanting Buddhist nuns — this album is eclectic and exploratory from every angle. Although the likes of Ministry and Hed Kandi ushered in a none-too-successful mini-age of Tokyo-inspired house Chill Dynasty could be its laid-back, easy-going, younger brother who’s moved out of the ‘house’ and into the garden to meditate. This album is a daring pursuit for any compilation let alone any individual artist but luckily MoShang manages to explore mainly unchartered territory and has found something unique and fresh. With its layered beats over traditional oriental musical instruments and with a touch of electronica thrown in for good measure Chillout Dynasty will be a true delight to any ‘Chinese Chillout’ fan. |
