Soil & "Pimp" Sessions - 'Sahara' |

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. Never more so than on this latest 12” as Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings greatest band get a new release before the forthcoming gig at London’s Jazz Cafe at the end of the month. Last year they were undoubtedly the pimps of the year with the Pimp Master album as these guys can combine the hottest steamin’ jazz of the club scene with the highest level of musicianship. ‘Sahara’ drives across the sands like a 4×4 with a carbon footprint the size of Apollo 13. But don’t let that fool you as the trumpet, sax and piano solos swing as well as any big band. Definitely a jazz dance favourite as it gets dirty at the end; everyone applauds! After 7 minutes of the original, you’d be after a rest if it wasn’t for the remix by Zed Bias. Like the percussive expertise of Spiritual South (as recently evidenced on ‘Fall Back’), Zed (aka Dave Jones, Maddslinky and half of Phuturistix) has used his broken beat expertise to get the drum and bass going a la bugz but in a mellow and cosmic way. You might even say, beautiful. Like Pimp Master, the forthcoming album Pinpoint gets to drop first on their other label, Victor Entertainment Japan before Brownswood release it in July. It’ll be massive again, as these guys are somethin’ else. All bow to the Pimp Masters! Soil & ‘Pimp’ Sessions Reviewed: Soil & ‘Pimp’ Sessions - ‘Sahara’ (Brownswood Recordins) Cat.
