Zane Lowe & Breaks Co-Op - The Sound Inside |

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. As you probably know, Mr. Lowe hails from New Zealand, has his own Radio 1 radio show and presents Gonzo (with the couch) on MTV2 on a Friday night. He was in a bit of a rush as he hadn’t had his lunch (this was 4pm!) but when I asked him what its like to interview world famous bands like the Foo Fighters on the couch he said, “even though I’m lucky enough to know some musicians as friends, it’s important to stay a little reverential.” We also had a chat about the Kiwi reggae scene and he realed off loads of names I’d not heard of (apart from Fat Freddy’s Drop, Katchafire and Rhombus) He’s been described as “kinda the Kiwi Gilles Peterson” which is not really eclectic enough as he’s equally into Queens Of The Stone age as Snoop Dog or the much missed Test Icicles. Somehow, I also got onto the subject of Jap Jazz, United Future Organisation and its re-emergence with the Soil and Pimp Sessions and and he said he was more of a DJ Krush man. Hey, this guy is cooler than I thought! Visit the new video sharing site for Fly and watch the Breaks Co-Op video ‘The Otherside’ Breaks Co-Op Zane’s just become a dad which curtailed his appearance at Great Escape Festival the other week (good chance to plug the Eighteenth Day Of May there). But there’s absolutely loads of opportunities to see him this summer as he seems to be appearing at all the rock festivals plus the band, Breaks Co-Op are appearing at the Rip Curl Board Masters in August (wonder if he’ll go to Jelly Jazz in the evening?). Before Fat Freddy’s Drop went to Amsterdam at the Best Kept Secret Weekend, they did a gig in Brixton with Break Co-Op as support. Zane told me the live show was “coming along” so possibly worth going to see? Well it’s the least Hectic could do was to get to the nearest CD emporium and get the latest album to check it out. The The Sound Inside. Originally released in New Zealand last year, Lowe is joined by countryman Hamish Clark and English producer and vocalist, Andy Lovegrove. Anyone expecting some Lowe-inspired power rock trio trash is going to be very disappointed. On the basis of the sample credits, all was looking good and there was the bonus of an appearance on keyboards on ‘Twilight’ by Nathan Haines (another Kiwi and also at BSK Weekender). And while there are some tracks which are a little bit too REM/Soft Rock like, there’s enough downtempo Coldcut folky trip hop jazzy stuff going on (not all at the same time of course). Lowe has one of the best jobs in the world so what’s the chances of him being a big success in this band? Quite high on this showing by the looks of it. And it’s a good cover!
