Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. Surprisingly for a band that has been making music for almost half a century Cuarto Cedrón continue to produce relevant and inspiring music. Contemporary tango may not have carved itself a place in the modern mainstream but the music of Cedrón serves to remind us of the shear emotion conveyed by tango. Lead singer Juan Cedrón’s deep and sometimes growly voice is complimented perfectly by the sometimes warm/sometimes melancholic acoustic sounds of the bandoneon, guitar, cello, viola and violin. The group may be based in Paris but the connection to their hometown Buenas Aires is represented in much of their music. This latest album is a homage, or elogio to Homero Manzi, the early 19th century tango lyricist. Manzi (1907-51) divided his time between political protest and reminiscing of lost loves and fading memories - it is the latter that is evoked in his lyrics. Manzi is widely credited with elevating the words of tango to the status of true poetry and here his words are matched perfectly by the music of Cedrón. Elogio is a mixture of previously unpublished texts discovered by Acho Manzi, Homero’s son and works composed in his honour. It is released on the Harmonia Mundi label. |
