Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. Colombia dominates the selection and the superb ‘Me voy pa’ Colombia’ is easily the most catchy tune on the album. This monster tune is a retread from Ismael Miranda’s 70s tune but what a cover! Johnny Polanco y su Conjunto Amistad though, are ironically not from Colombia but New York (Dominican/Puerto Rican descent). But hailing from the mighty country itself are Los Nemus with their unlikely entitled “Tremendo mal odor’ — featuring the soft vocal tones of Choco Alex Murilllo in the son-influenced track. Strong contributions from Grupo Gale, Charlie D’Cali y su Salsa, Sexteto Café and Sonora Carruseles continue the Colombian connection, with perhaps the best track of all of these groups’ songs being from the latter one ‘Esta es mi son’ — featuring the superb guest vocals of Cubana Raquel Zozoya. Of course Colombian legend Fruko gets his freak on with ‘Las maracas’, one of those tunes that does not really mean much but by crikey it gets you moving. The Caleños and Paisas don’t have it all their own way, in fact some of the best tunes don’t even come from Latin America, such as ‘Son fo’ from super group Africando, who have produced some of the most memorable ‘Latin’ music of the past decade. In the case of this track, it is the soft nasal tone of the lead singer, that instantly recognisably Senegalese sound that captivates while the beats do their work on your feet. Plenty of the songs selected are from groups formed from members of the Latin Diaspora in the US or Europe. Salsa is above all the story of a groove that could not be stopped, something so infectious that in a global entertainment economy dominated by the mighty dollar and the Anglo Saxon model of music, it could still break through around the world from Dakar to Dagenham and from Kinshasa to Kyoto not once but repeatedly over the last century. This album really scores if you love dancing and want a selection that will let you do your stuff without fail. ¡Vamos a bailar!
