Matthew holds first-class honours in music from Oxford University, but he's been doing his best to repair the damage ever since. Several years of programme-making in Radio 3 were followed by a sideways move onto the then small crest of the internet wave and the single-handed launch of Radio 3's first website, where his biggest scoop was an interview with Yoko Ono. A couple of years in the spiritual desert of the commercial world at the height of the dot.com boom left him high and dry, and his subsequent travels in South-East Earth were followed by a drift back into the BBC, where he's now the editor responsible for a bunch of interactive projects supporting different kinds of learning about music.

Meanwhile he's pursued various outside musical interests, from contemporary classical composition through jazz piano (with the quartet Linear B) to CD reviews for bbc.co.uk/music. The Latin American connection is central to Matthew's life - a year digging holes in Colombia sparked an enduring affinity, which later took him to Cuba with Fly's editor-at-large (where he heard his hero Silvio Rodriguez live in Havana's Teatro Karl Marx), into some comical attempts at dancing salsa and eventually back to Colombia to marry his paisa wife Sarah. Matthew and Sarah live in West London where they dream of sunnier days to come.
