AfroBluefeaturing Nuru Kane & Bayefall Gnawa - The Spitz

The Shrine takes over The Spitz for an intimate series of Afrocentric alchemy. A bubbling laboratory of nu-roots from the frontiers of Africa's cutting edge music scene.

nuru kane

The first in this new series is titled AfroBlue, featuring the magical Nuru Kane who's teamed up with Brixton Blues Bad Boy Errol Linton for a one-off night that's guaranteed to leave you quaking in your blue suedes.

Nuru Kane (pronounced N'Roo Can)- the astounding Senegalese singer/songwriter, who first grabbed attention with his performance at Mali's Festival in the Desert in 2004, launches his new album. His voice is wonderful and his songs intriguing. Tonight he is joined by his Paris-based band, Bayefall Gnawa, comprising of musicians from Mali, Morocco, Senegal and France.

Born 31 years ago in Medina, Dakar, Senegal Nuru Kane is both a natural band front man and utterly compelling solo performer. Holding everything together is Nuru's golden voice. Whether singing in Wolof, Peul, Soninke, French or English his tone is totally engaging and beyond beauty. Guaranteed to enthrall the majority and maybe get the goat of the traditionalist and the purist, it's exciting and heartbreaking, energizing, honest and thoroughly modern. Will an African musician ever take his own sound into the global mainstream? If anyone can, Nuru Kane.

'Nuru is a tall and charismatic character with his own style-he is something special' CHARLIE GILLET, BBC London and Radio 2 presenter

'Errol is an immaculate virtuoso of a blues harp player, Brixton born and bred, Sonny Boy Williamson and Augustus Pablo sparring in every note he blows.'STRAIGHT NO CHASER magazine
