Afrolution African Hip Hop Festival - Cargo, London, 8 October '06

October 8th marks a coming of age for African hip hop when Afrolution Records, the London-based African hip hop label, is bringing together some of the biggest names in African hip hop for a night of hip hop from the Motherland to take place at East London’s Cargo

Afrolution Records’ ground-breaking compilation release Afrolution Vol. 1 – The Original African hip hop Collection was the first compilation of its kind in the world to represent both Francophone and Anglophone African countries. The release also includes a DVD featuring 13 music videos, interviews and b-boying from the Cape Town “African Hip Hop Indaba”. Media reactions to this compilation included:

“A fascinating picture of where African hip hop has come from and where it might be going.” THE DAILY TELEGRAPH

“Funky, illuminating and smart — as an insight to a world beneath the headlines Afrolution is invaluable. Volume 2 is awaited with interest.” BBC ONLINE

“Enough innovation to shame many more developed countries.”
hip hop CONNECTION

“A welcome introduction to Africa’s current hip hop sounds.” flyglobalmusic.com

The aim of the Afrolution African hip hop Festival, the first event of its kind in Europe, is to create a “home away from home” for hip hop heads in the London Diaspora. London is still the biggest destination for immigrants from Africa, and there is a very vibrant scene, but no event specifically highlighting the power of African hip hop has ever been staged here. “We’re trying to plant seeds for more shows and unify the African hip hop community based in Europe” states Trenton Birch, the head of Afrolution Records. “I do however feel that African hip hop has great crossover appeal due to its originality and new stories, so this is a good opportunity for us to showcase our genre to a European community as well- Africa’s time is coming!” he concludes.

Performing at the event will be:

MIGRANT SOULS — Arguably Africa’s most established and respected MC, Metaphysics from Zimbabwe is an accomplished hip hop lyricist, media personality and performer. He’s worked with some of the biggest names in the world (Busta Rhymes, Mariah Carey, Slum Village etc), is currently based in Germany and is the MC for the multi-platinum selling German artist Xavier Naidoo. Nu-Reggae legend Laygwan Sharkie is the second member of the group and is also a vocalist with the highly successful German artist Patrice. Together their explosive hip hop show aims to set the venue on fire.

WAWESH — Robert Wawero Kiboy hails from the notorious Pumuwani Estate in Kenya. He raps in his native Swahili dialect and was responsible for the infectious 2005 single, “Mjanja”.

KIMBA / REAL ELEMENTS — Kimba Andersen is the co-founder of Real Elements. This versatile Hip Hop outfit from Malawi are at the cutting edge of African hip hop culture, bringing colour and much-needed conscious lyrics to the fore.

DIVIDED KINGDOM REPUBLIC (DKR) — Zimbabwean rappers Munyaradzi Nota and Kudzi Mambara are currently based in London and are poised to release a brand new album that looks set to catapult them to the forefront of global African hip hop.

GALAXY HIGH — Babou Nian is one of Gambia’s most accomplished MCs and has opened for luminaries like Redman, The Roots, Jeru the Damaja and Wu Tang Clan’s Ghostface Killah.

The event will be hosted by TRENTON BIRCH, considered a pioneer in the African Music scene. From Johannesburg, but also raised in Kenya, Bahrain and Nigeria, Trenton has a solid background in the music industry and is currently based in London. He is the head of Afrolution Records / Black Mango Music and the front man for the band, Free Radical. DJ EDU is the night’s DJ and also co-host. London-based Edu, originally from Kenya, is at the forefront of driving the African movement via his Destination Africa radio show on BBC 1Xtra. The night’s other DJ is DJ FREESTYLE who is pushing African Urban sounds as a well-respected member of London’s new Voice of Africa Radio.

All eyes on South Africa
www.myspace.com/eyezon

South Africa, among various other African countries have been churning out hip hop acts that have had the chance to break out of their borders and reach major music markets around the globe. Johannesburg’s Eyezon is one example of quality South African hip hop, accessable to an even wider audience due to his fluency in the english tongue.

Eyezon, born and raised in Johannesburg, father gone and mother exiled to Germany, made a choice to move to the United States to start a new life and expand his hip hop talent. A stark contrast to the original outlets to which hip hop reached Eyezon’s ears, only through mixtapes and recorded radio shows brought to him in Jo’burg by his uncle.

His debut album entitled 7 Miles From Earth precedes an upcoming project that will be produced entirely by an up-and-coming North Carolina producer, Young Sean.

7 Miles From Earth is currently available online for FREE download http://www.loudminoritymusic.com/records/miles.html
