Azymuth - UK Tour 08-13 November 09

Azymuth are the foremost trio in Brasilian music - not only the kings of Samba Jazz, but the lords of Fusion - and they are back in the UK.

The legendary Brazilian jazz funk trio are on a five date tour with two-nights at London’s Ronnie Scott’s jazz club (as part of their 50th anniversary celebrations), the world famous Southport Weekender, Manchester’s newly re-opened Band on the Wall (as previously featured HERE) as well as Bristol’s largest venue Colston Hall.

Ever since their worldwide hit ‘Jazz Carnival’, they have been the mega stars who combine funk, soul and jazz with samba. The legendary Brazilian three piece orchestra who were responsible for creating a new sound and genre of their own - ‘Samba Doido (Crazy Samba)’. The original line-up Jose Roberto Bertrami, Ivan Conti and Alex Malheiros make up the trio have released over 20 albums in thirty five years. And only that, since 1995 they have been releasing outstanding albums for Far Out Recordings, the last being the fantastic Butterfly (which Songlines described as “the best Azymuth album to date…truly sublime stuff.”) plus some side projects like the recent Jose Roberto Bertrami and his Modern Sound album Aventura and fatherly interest in Alex’ daughter Sabrina Malheiros (with the recently released re-worked New Morning : Deluxe Edition). And next up, at the end of the month their the Alex Malheiros & Banda Utopia feat. Sabrina Malheiros album The Wave to look forward to.

Back to Azymuth, they have toured the very best venues over the decades and in 2008 played a legendary show with Azymuth fanatics Madlib and Mochilla at Los Angeles’ Echo Plex. Mochilla (B+ and Eric Coleman) and Madlib tracked down Azymuth’s drummer Ivan ‘Mamao’ Conti in Rio, 2002, to play their tribute record to him and to kick-start 2008’s Madlib/Ivan Conte collaboration album Sujinho as Jackson Conti on Mochilla Records (they of the Keepintime project).

Their European tour followed, taking in famous venues including Paris’ New Morning and London’s Jazz CafĂ©. Azymuth have graced the top jazz festivals Monterrey, Montreux, North Sea Jazz and Glastonbury, and the finest venues including Blue Note of New York, Tokyo & Milan. In November 2009 they will finally play the world renowned Southport Soul Weekender and Ronnie Scott’s jazz club.

In 2009 Azymuth return to Europe and are ready to dazzle those who have yet to witness their unique live show even if they are in their fourth decade together as friends and visionary musicians. Azymuth are true originals and they really do sound better than ever.
