Bangla-Beat to Afro-Beat - Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, 13 March '06

Asia House showcases a funky fusion of traditional and contemporary Bangladeshi music on the South Bank. The concert explores the musical roots of Bangladesh from the sounds of the homelands through to contemporary world fusion

Bangla-Beat to Afro-Beat - Queen Elizabeth Hall, Monday 13 March '06

Rob Fakir and Shajahan Munshi play traditional Lalon and Baul music found in the shantytowns and melas of Bangladesh. UNESCO declared Baul music of Bangladesh a National Heritage in November 2005 and this is a rare treat to hear it in London.

Ektaar All Stars, led by Ornob represents the new generation of Bangladeshi musicians with a contemporary urban approach to Bangladesh’s musical heritage. The lead singer Ornob, is one of Bangladesh’s most creative and multi-talented stars.

Kishon Khan’s international world fusion project Lokkhi Terra, mixes Bengali folk with other world traditions from Cuban rumba to Nigerian Afro-beat, representing a British-Bangladeshi approach to this heritage. With special guest Fazal Qureshi on Tabla.

The concert will appeal to anyone interested in world music and will feature as one of the opening events of the Festival of Muslim Cultures. There is a free pre-concert talk at 6.30pm exploring the music and heritage of Bangladesh and free music in the foyer at 6pm with one of the UK’s most distinctive contemporary jazz artists, Zoe Rahman on piano accompanied by her brother Idris Rahman on clarinet.
