To get the low down on her appeaance on the Gilles Peterson show, check out Part 1 of the interview (click HERE). In this Part 2, we find out more about what she’s been doing and where to go in Amsterdam. We we’re talking about LA which led onto the visit of Jackson Conti to Amsterdam for their gig back in May promoting the Sujinho album (as produced my Madlib and Azymuth legend Mamao), “the Jackson Conti album and Brazil In Time gig was great. To see Mamao and Tony Allen was special and of course DJ Nuts, Madlib & J Rocc. You know how they roll!” Oh yes we do and it sounds like its been rollin’ nicely for MamikO in the land of orange. “Since September I moved to Amsterdam and joined the Rednose Distrikt Clan working on studio projects as well as setting up the Samurai.fm/amsterdam radio page”. I’ve had a sneek preview of the Radio Show and it’s awesome; a Spaceways of a Carlos NiƱo style radio show! She’s such a HepCat. Whilst her appearance on Gilles’ show was a beats special, in reality she’s a FLY girl really, “I don’t like to ‘think in shelves’. The system persuades people to classify, organize every thing, put it all under the label or in this case - genre. I like to keep it OPEN-MINDED and as a DJ, my job is to search, find and deliver the music the open-minded way. When I moved to London I joined Other Worlds crew and we worked on Planet Rescue project that unfortunately never made it to the vinyl. I was also working on a weekly live orientated jazz night at Brazilian Club at Guanabara (Holborn). We had great bands on, like Sound Species, Finn Peters (new album Butterflies, Eska and Heidi Vogel, Rima and loads more. We always had a good time there (see Max Cole), Yeah, we always had a good time, especially at the Max Cole Planet Rescue gig (see review HERE) and Bossa Futura. On the subject of getting exposure, the week before Gilles’ said he should have saved a track by Daisuke Tanabe (on Burntprogress/Fluid Ounce/Dancing Turtle) for the Beats Special show, has the idea of Burntprogress/CDr made it over to Amsterdam? “There is a very similar night, called 8BAR that is run more or less same way as CDR night at Plastic People. It was founded by one of the most known contemporary cats in Amsterdam, Tom Trago, but recently the baton has been past to the crazy ‘Drie Keer Niks’ crew, DJ and Beat Maker, O.Boogie (who’s produced the 2007 summer 12” hit Paper Chaser, released on Beat Dimensions)”. “We’ve been talking to Tony (Nwachukwu) and Gavin (Alexander) about bringing the original CDR2 Amsterdam, but nothing concrete decided yet. There are A LOT of fresh very young cats making dem beats daily. Like the Starwars beat I chose from Sir OJ Gullyion. Definitely worth checking out plus Cinnaman and his Beat Dimensions project, Rednose Distrikt, Overlast, FS Green, Lois Bordeaux and Javaanse Jongen and Everyone you’ll find on 8BAR myspace friends. On the worldwide tip definitely more and more cats popping out with beats; I’m watching :brownstudy, Monopoly, SamiYam, Dorian Concept, Dimlite, Hudson Mohawke (his album on WARP gonna be craaaaaaazyyyy! Get ready 4IT!), Mweslee… My astroman Max Cole, Moonstarr, Jazzy Sport Crew”. Back in May, she was DJing at Samurai FM’s 5th Birthday bash at Visions but what’s her club of choice in her new home town? “There is a lot going on these days in Amsterdam. You can find something to do almost everyday. People like to party here:o) Clubs like Studio K, Bimhuis, Canvas, Paradiso always have something interesting on. Also check Regular Beat Dimensions nights, Rednose Distrikt residency and Big Kisses nights are always good fun”. So things must get even more hedonistic when the Amsterdam Dance festival is on? “It is a ‘little’ Festival feel in the city. All clubs are covered with worldwide famous DJs, producers and bands. Everyone is out record shopping and business, music swapping mission during day-time and performing at several clubs during the night. Of course, IT’s all about the PARTY! It is great a great vibe and huge choice on what music to dance your night away. We will be covering part of ADE and doing a room at Studio K club with Samurai.fm/amsterdam this year. As a realivty new resident of Amsterdam, MamikO has a fresh view of where to go and reminds me some of my old watering holes I’ve rather enjoyed in the past. “If you mean a jazz bar, called Alto, Yes! It is still there. The genever bar is still there too (that’s a Gin House near Centraal Train Station). A great bar I like to go to is called Duivel (Reguliersdwarsstraat), named under dutch beer. Its a cool spot for a late night drink. They always have a DJ there playing from midnight until 3/4am. A lot of good music, mostly hip hop and soul orientated, but my favorite night is Tuesday as its non-hip hop night and there you can hear a lot of fusion, which is great!”. “the Best bar for a huge choice of Belgian beer is Belgique (Belgium. It is also a smallest bar in Amsterdam). Good music and if you’re into street art, this is a spot where you can meet local finest artists (for example LilShy (www.lilshy.net), London police (www.thelondonpolice.com), Two Things (www.twothings.net), Why Style (www.whystyle.com) sipping on le chouffe. (www.cafe-belgique.nl)”. “And for the summer time, I have to mention Tea House which is in the middle of the beautiful Vondelpark. Its a great small cafe in a shape of Blue Tea Pot and my friends Max Cole and Mark Cremins are doing their More Tea Vicar (www.moretheevicar.blogspot.com) day activities on a monthly Sunday with International acts, such as previous guests Mark Pritchard and James Pants) Obviously, she’s fully absorbing the rich culture of the city, “Favorite museums are POST CS (stedelijk, contemperary art museum), FOAM gallery. Van Gogh is cool, nice building from architect Kishio Kurosawa and they claim to have the biggest originals collection in the world. My favorite restaurant at the moment is a Japanese, called Tempura. Just seconds away from Botanical gardens and the zoo. There are quite a few good Italian restaurants in Amsterdam. Da Noi or Toscanini will not disappoint any food guru and if you’re wandering through Amsterdam streets and looking for a quick snack break, there is a great Thai snack bar, called The Bird in China town”. “Music lovers should visit and dig at Rush Hour, Concerto, Waxwell, Second Life, Blue Note record shops. There are lots of bookshops and various weird antique shops where you can find a lot of surprises too. Keep your eyes and ears wide open while you cruise along those canals”. And we best not forget the 10” single on The Hooter Listens by a great band called The Leaf Library with a brilliant remix from ISAN (Static Caravan/Morr Music) which you can get from Rush Hour (www.rushhour.nl/thehooterlistens). P.S. Just incase you haven’t heard, the Dutch have done the unthinkable in a city of ‘Brown Bars’ (so called due to the colour of the nicoteen stained walls and ceilings) and have introuded a tobacco smoking ban? She says, “the smoking ban arrived 1st of July here. He he..Its all cool. Everyone is still smoking weed. They won’t get them so easily!” So that’s Madlib sorted out at least. Don’t forget the excellence of Liquid Spirits that’s out now and started Peterson’s show this week (17th July) and , For Part 1 of this interview click HERE. Links |
