Caetano Veloso - Barbican, London, 3 July '10

One of the world’s great songwriters and a thrilling live performer, Brazilian superstar Caetano Veloso returns to the UK to play a rare concert at the Barbican

His seductive, melodic voice and bossa-nova style guitar encapsulate the sound of Brazil, whilst pushing the boundaries of musical tradition into exciting new realms.

Veloso is considered one of Brazil’s heroes; his experimentation with rock and bossa-nova styles in the late 1960s established his position as a leading proponent of the Tropicália movement, the harvests of which were considered so subversive that he was arrested by the military government and sent into exile. He found musical sanctuary in London, first arriving in the UK in 1969. Veloso has since established an ever expanding international reputation and has been awarded Five Latin Grammies.

Tonight Caetano Veloso returns to London to play material from his latest release Zii e Zie (Wrasse) described by Songlines as “a kind of Radiohead-tinged samba - glorious, satisfying stuff, consolidating Veloso’s return to his grandiose best.”
