Carlinhos Brown and Mr Catra - The Barbican, 24 June '08

Carlinhos Brown is set to appear on the Barbican on June 24th supported by funkeiro Mr Catra

One of many great musicians to come from the northern state of Bahia, Carlinhos Brown is widely regarded as one of the most creative of the new generation of Brazilian artists, and one who has put Afro-Brazilian rhythms at the heart of his music. Soon after his first hit composition was recorded by Luiz Caldas in 1985, he was asked to join Caetano Veloso’s band, a major boost to his career. The list of artists that have recorded Carlinhos´ compositions includes figures like Maria Bethânia, Gal Costa, Daniela Mercury, Arnaldo Antunes, Marisa Monte — and even the heavy metal band Selpultura.

Among Brown’s many projects are the mighty percussion ensemble Timbalada and Lactomia, a percussion band formed by children and adolescents who play on instruments made by themselves made from cans, water bottles and other recycled objects. Brown has been a prime mover in many youth-and community-oriented projects in Bahia’s capital Salvador and in 2002 was awarded the UNESCO Youth Prize.

From his first solo album Alfagamabetizado released to critical acclaim in 1996, Brown has been an inspired musical magpie, incorporating the many sounds and rhythms of Bahia along with the whole range of Brazilian styles as well as rock and funk. He has received two Latin Grammy awards and contributed to the film score of the musical documentary about Salvador Bahia, El Milagro de Candeal. His last CD, A Gente Ainda Não Sonhou (SonyBMG) combines Brazilian percussion mixed with electronica, psychedelic strings and booming beats; an intoxicating mix of primitivism and sophistication, laced with reggae.

Making his UK debut is Mr Catra, one of the showiest performers of Rio’s carioca funk.
