Daedelus / Plume - Big Chill House, Kings Cross (07/10/08) |

Walking around the less salubrious areas of Kings Cross could get you into trouble, especially wearing Reebok Kool-Aid trainers with almost as much facial hair of Friedrich Engles. So bumping into Daedelus in Kings Cross was more than fate as we caught up and chated about Kingston, Welsh rappers Y Diwygiad, the Monome (that’s the box in the photo) and his interview for Red Bull Music Academy Radio (thanks for Matt for the tip-off on that one). So between us we got him into the newly re-furbished St. Pancras Station for a bite to eat before the big show at the Big Chill House. Daedelus was a first timer at this venue and he was anxious to get back to see the support act, a French girl called Plume. In fact, he wasn’t the only one as there were one or two faces in the crowd including Bonobo’s drummer and half of TM Juke and The Jack Baker Trio, Mr. Jack Baker and the Belleruche’s very own (although she’s worked with both TM Juke and Aaron Jerome recently), Kathrin de Boer. A bit of a Tru-Thoughts gathering, check out respective recent albums Boto And The Second Liners and The Express. Katherine had seen Plume before in France and she’s a bit of a one off; multi-instrumentalist with tape loop machine, vocalist and magician! With mix of styles she keeps your attention in a quirky way (I particularly liked the jazz skat trumpet inmation) and she’s booked in for the Belleruche album launch where she promises to get out the puppet show! It was good to see a female DJ at this venue (DJ Darlo) who played a healthy mix of old and new but the crowd was packed now as Daedelus had got changed into his best stage gear and was ready to amaze us as usual. If you’ve not seen Daedelus live, you must. A true original who never quite knows where he’s going to go; he started with a ‘version’ of a Beach Boys track tonight of all things. And Thursdays look like becoming the ‘new Friday’ sees Daedelus down on the south coast with Tim Exile and Ninja Tune veteran DJ Food and loads more. See links below for details. Expect to be amazed when Daedelus’ collaboration with Mrs. Darling (aka The Long Lost) and I’ve just managed to pick up last years’ compilation From L.A. With Love that features loads of Alfred’s mates and includes a track by Adventure Time (that is Alfred and Frosty). All of Daedelus’ work is essential so don’t miss out next time. Links |
