DMC World DJ Championships 2006 - Hammersmith Palais, London, 10/11 September '06

After almost a 10 year break DMC return with The Summit where World Champions of the highest order gather under one roof for the ultimate turntable showdown. This is the pinnacle of the two day event and the only opportunity to see these legends jam together and showcase their individual skills.

DMC World DJ Championships 2006 - Hammersmith Palais, London, 10/11 September

Beat junkies and turntablists beware, the 2006 DMC World DJ Championships are upon us, with this year’s event looking set to be the biggest yet. The event will be taking place at the Hammersmith Palais in London on the 10th and 11th September.

This year is the 21st Anniversary of the championships and there is a whopping $30,000 in prize money up for grabs along with those world-renowned golden turntables.

This year the rules have been brought back to basics with only one set of Technics SL1210 MK2 turntables, one mixer with no effects or modifications and only stylus in the Ortofon range allowed per competitor. A factor which will give each participant an equal platform and really crank up the pressure for each round.

The competition is broken down into three key events: The Battle For World Supremacy, a solo head-to head knock out with rounds leading to the last two DJs standing. The Team Event, which features teams of two, three or four DJs using up to 8 turntables to battle each other. And finally — the Individual Event, the main solo event to find and crown the new DMC World DJ Champion.

WORLD DJ CHAMPIONSHIP
1st: Netik (France)
2nd: Yasa (Japan)
3rd: Rafik (Germany)
BATTLE FOR WORLD SUPREMACY
1st: DJ Coma (Japan)
2nd: Troubl’ (France)
TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
1st: C2C (France)
2nd: Disablists (UK)

This weekend saw the DJ event of the year at The Hammersmith Palais. The DMC World DJ Championships was bigger and better than ever and it was an event not to miss, but just in case you did, here’s what went down.

This year the French contingent dominated the competition across the board. But Japan wasn’t going to let them take home everything!

For the main event of the Championships, the Individual Crown, tensions were running high to see who was going to be crowned DMC World DJ Champion. The heats went down in the early evening and DJ’s were cheered and jeered with some sets not going as planned.
It was a close call and although there were feelings that Yasa from Japan should have clinched it, it was French DJ, Netik, who clinched that oh-so-coveted golden deck and the handsome cheque of $10,000.

On Sunday evening the event started of with ‘The Battle for World Supremacy’. With everyone performing for the title some DJs would stop at nothing to impress the judges and that all came to a head when Kid Sid from Sweden actually set his records on fire to end his blazing set!
The standard for this category was very high and the gloves came off to see who would be crowned the winner of the ‘World Supremacy’ title. All competitors brought a lot of skill to the tables but in the end there could only be one winner and this year it was DJ Coma from Japan who delivered a varied and powerful set!
Troubl’ from France came second in this event, narrowly missing out on the coveted number one spot. As the weekend progressed, the line up of nations became quite familiar.
The ‘Team Championship’ on Sunday night was an amazing sight for all.

The heats went down and so did the competitors until it was down to just two teams to do battle in the final. 3 times world champions and back to defend their title, C2C, were up against the British entry Disablists. C2C threw down the mother of all sets and tore the house down to win their 4th consecutive title, pure genius!!

Not to be out done by Kid Sid’s stunt on the previous day an unknown team claiming to be the Italian entry turned up to perform with masks over their faces and, without taking them off all day, managed to conceal their identity. It turned out they were the runner up team from the French heats, Scratch Science, rivalling C2C!
