THE BACKGROUND
Seven years ago, one of Africa’s most developed countries began a fateful journey. One that would lead to an economic spiral that now sees it having the world’s highest inflation rate, human rights abuses and poignant levels of poverty. The Zimbabwean catastrophe is no secret. Ill-conceived land reforms and economic mismanagement have created an urgent humanitarian crisis.

In 2005 a campaign to ‘clean up cities and fight the black market across Zimbabwe’ resulted in controversial evictions and demolitions leaving half a million people homeless and facing serious economic hardship. Exacerbated by a long running drought, the crisis continues.

The humanitarian inferno rages on. Poverty is rampant and access to education and basic health is only for those who can afford it. A fifth of all Zimbabwean children have lost a parent. 1 in 8 children dies before they are five years old. More than a quarter of children suffer stunted growth due to poor nutrition. Half the population do not have access to adequate sanitation facilities. Life expectancy is just 34 years and half of children do not go to school.

The Get Up Stand Up concert is an event conceived by London based record company, Fourth World Music, who have brought together award winning and internationally renowned artists to perform live on stage at the prestigious Union Chapel in North London’s Islington. All proceeds from the event are being donated to Plan International and World Vision and an unnamed Zimbabwean charity who are working on the ground in Zimbabwe to help to create a better life for affected children and affected communities.

Dennis Tapfuma, founder of Fourth World Music says, “We were motivated to do this event by the fact that there are nearly a million Zimbabweans living in the United Kingdom. Most of whom will have been emotionally affected by the crisis, and are in a position to do something to help charities working with vulnerable people in Zimbabwe.” He adds, “Putting together an event like this seemed like the best possible way for people to get actively involved, by supporting charities who are making a difference back in Zimbabwe.”

COMMENTS

It’s affecting most of Zimbabweans but I really wish and pray that us Zimbabwean in UK,USA and all around the World we can make a change in our land by helping and assisting disadvantaged people in our Country. Look at it if every Zimbabwean in UK only pays only a pound a month we can change the country as long as the money goes into the rights hands.

Right now myself and my-laws I am married to a white british woman very wonderful and she fell in love with the country after i took her and my-laws to Zimbabwe we have so far raised about a thousand pounds for a school in a Rural area which I can’t name it for Security reasons.

if anyone wishes to understand more and an official letter from that school asking for assistance is most welcome to read it.

I will doing half marathon on the 10/06/2007 raising the money going torwards the same school all the money raised is not going to be given to some one but is going towards the developments of the school.

Thank you so much for all the effort to help people in Zimbabwe.

May God our all mighty help us as we need him now!

Kindest regards,

Jonathan Mbadzo.

It’s about time someone showed support for our brothers and sisters back in Zimbabwe. Thank you. I will definitely be there!

We support what Dennis and Fourth World Music are doing to make a difference.

It’a about standing up, and instead of talking, actually putting all the brilliant ideas we have as Zimbabweans in practice.

We can search for all the excuses NOT TO DO ANYTHING, but at the end of the day it is up to us to put trust into a brilliant event such as this.

I can proudly say that I have the education that I have today due to the charity of others. Now it’s my chance to give back and start a Movement that will become a circle of Prosperity, and not poverty.

Get out there and support the cause.
