Gilles Peterson, Felix Buxton & The Atlantic Horns - Southampton 12-03-09

Whilst Southampton’s football team are still coming to terms with the Dutch management, the not such Dutch venue called the Orange Rooms continues to the place to be and be seen and last night proved to be that little bit extra special.

GillesPetersonOrangeMarch09.jpg

Gilles was fresh from the previous nights’ show on Radio 1, the one with Floating Points, Alexander Nut (review coming soon of his Rinse:08 compilation that’s out later this month) and Fatima in the Studio and was on top form as ever and still buzzin’ after AFC winning the penalty shoot out against Roma.

He always gets this crowd going and draws support from local heroes of the Part-Time variety with his usual mix of old and new. The last time I saw him here was just as the Soil & “Pimp” Sessions’ Planet Pimp album was coming out and he had his mates BPM and Rob Gallagher down with him (well GP did pick ‘Little One’ for the Final Song compilation) but he’s got a busy weekend coming up with the sold out Q-Tip show at the Roundhouse and a Brownswood & Need2Soul Afterparty!

And in these days of credit crunching, it can be difficult to get folks to come out mid-week these days so clubs and artists have to be that little bit more inventive. So it was a bonus for Felix Buxton (he of Basement Jaxx) to DJ with The Atlantic Horns (as in the distinctive sounds of Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse along with recording with Basement Jaxx, Groove Armada, Hard-Fi, Natalie Williams and many more).

Of course the Bacardi promotions helped but the horns swung to the thumpin’ house beats controlled by Felix. Got me thinking about GP DJing with a legend, like Eddie Henderson? That’d be a bit special but next week at the Orange Rooms is the clash of Beardyman vs. JFB and the week after it’s the return of the ever popular Scratch Perverts (26th March).

Another great night out and I must stop thinking about the girl in the hot pants and the (in)efficencies of South West Trains; talk about two extremes!
