Djibril Diop Mambéty - Konono No1 Cancelled - Tate Modern, 23 May '08

The Turbine Hall will host a rare showing of two groundbreaking films by the acclaimed Senegalese director Djibril Diop Mambéty (1945-1998). Unfortunately due to visa issues, Konono No1 have had to cancel. See below for refund information

Djibril Diop Mambéty was the most wildly talented and irreverent filmmaker to emerge from Africa at the end of the 1960s. His striking work is marked by its radical use of sound and wry, satirical approach to colonialism.

Friday 23 May, 21.00, Turbine Hall, Tate Modern

The Tate Modern is sorry to announce that due to difficulties in securing European visas the Congolese band Konono No 1 are unable to travel from Kinshasa as originally planned and advertised.

The event is still going ahead on Friday 23 May though with a screening in the Turbine Hall of films by award-winning director Djibril Diop Mambéty. Afrobeat DJ Rita Ray will set the scene for these powerful, rarely seen films. Mambéty’s film Badou Boy, 1970, will be screened with its original soundtrack and his first film, Contras City, 1969 will also be shown.

People who had booked to see Konono No 1 are being refunded in full, and are additionally invited to attend the alternative event as the Tate’s guests.

Tickets to the new Mambéty /Rita Ray event, priced at £5, are now available online at www.tate.org.uk or via 020 7887 8888
