Land Of Kings, Dalston - 16/17th April

Hard to imagine that the Kingsland Road leads to the Land Of Kings but this new festival highlights their love Dalston as much as you do with a two-night celebration of the people and places that make this part of London special.

LandOfKIngs.JPG

Featuring theatres, basement bars, clubs, cafés, warehouses and traditional pubs the Land of Kings will mix-up locations and favourite artists like an East End ‘Camden Crawl’.

Keeping it local, most of Land of Kings artists, DJs, promoters and labels have connections with the Dalston/Stoke Newington borders. With such area of diversity (in more ways than you could think) the DJs, promoters and labels provide a genre-busting melting pot of afro, disco, gypsy punk, electro, jazz and techno. All-you-can-eat for your ears and feet!

Club heavyweights Greco Roman, Tayo, Todd Hart and Durr’s Rory Phillips sit alongside disco stalwarts Idjut Boys, Faze Action and eclectic deck master Ben Westbeech. The prolific Skill Wizard go head to head with Chrome Hoof DJs and smooth operators Work It, while New Young Pony Club DJs Tahita and Andy will be getting all the bright young things moving.

Meanwhile, live offerings come from gothic post-rockers An Experiment on A Bird in The Air Pump, pound shop popster Sportsday Megaphone, rising grime star Iain Woods and The Psychologist and Tom Neville’s newest roman-to-disco imagining, colouringIN.

As well as bands and DJs, daughter company of the lauded Punchdrunk collective, Gideon Reeling, will be taking over a Victorian hall treating those lucky enough to find them to song and dance. Whilst Community theatre company Stoke Newington International Airport will perform a festival exclusive rework of their sell out show, The Christmas Bullet.

No Dalston jaunt would be complete without taking in the area’s ocakbasi and mangals, some of which will be offering festival specials to those with wristbands; fine fare fit for a King.

Land Of The Kings is about some of the people and places that make this part of London so special. It doesn’t claim to be exhaustive; there’s just too much going on for that. People have been going out in this area for years (and years), so for some it’s a celebration of what they know, for others maybe about discovering something new.
