Launch night of the Basement Jazz Sessions - London, 7 March '06

On Tuesday 7 March, a new monthly series of live jazz commences in West London. In the intimate basement setting of Brook’s Bar, near Hammersmith, two very different musical ensembles, sharing a passion for pouring intense improvisation over solid grooves, will perform extended sets…

Future sessions will focus on jazz, but also include soul, acoustic hip hop, and folk music from around the world.

WTF
WTF is a jazz-funk sextet that brings together instrumentalists from a variety of musical backgrounds, united by the urge to play fresh jazz with an edge. The result is a potent cocktail, heavy on the essence of jazz — improvisation, hard and true — and with a generous splash of funk. Depending on the mood and according to taste, other exotic ingredients, such as drum ‘n’ bass, blues, reggae, and house, are thrown into the mix.

El-Andalus
El-Andalus is a trio of oud, violin, and percussion, composed of members of the renowned fusion group Fantazia. Their hypnotic rhythms and exuberant melodies have enthralled audiences at Womad and listeners to Andy Kershaw’s BBC Radio 3 show, transporting them to Moorish Spain, the Maghreb, and the Sahara.
